Washtenaw County is home to at least 400 undocumented immigrant families, many of whom are trying to get legal status. They work in many areas– restaurants, hotels, construction, housekeeping, yard work, and elder care, usually at very low wages and without any benefits or social safety net. Most pay taxes with a Taxpayer Identification Number, but this does not qualify them for any governmental assistance. To add to the difficulty, they are no longer allowed to have drivers’ licenses.
Even in normal times it’s hard to make a living at low wages when you are dependent on public transport. These rallies ask for the legislature to allow undocumented workers to have driver’s licenses while waiting to gain legal status.
Cosecha is having a car caravan protest in defense of immigrant dignity in Ann Arbor this coming Friday. Meeting at noon at Pioneer High School.
