Elissa SlotkinUnited States SenateMy professional background is in national security, working in intelligence and defense. I was recruited into the CIA directly out of graduate school, where I was trained as a Middle East analyst and served three tours alongside our military in Iraq. This bipartisan, country-first approach has informed my work in Congress. Additionally, I have proudly worked for both Republicans and Democrats in my career, including directly for President Bush and President Obama. This also means that I take a deeply bipartisan approach to all of my work in Congress. I believe in bipartisanship in my bones: my guiding principle in office has always been to work with people based on how committed they are to serving their constituents, not by party affiliation. Finally, I hope to bring a different style to the Senate. If elected, I’ll be the youngest Democratic woman in the U.S. Senate. The whole world around the Senate has changed, and we need a new generation of leaders in the Senate.I have fought to pass legislation on the issues that benefit Michiganders. I was a strong advocate of the Inflation Reduction Act, CHIPS Act, and Infrastructure bill, all of which supercharged MI’s economy, equipped our state for the 21st century, and created good-paying jobs for Michiganders. Additionally, I have worked to reduce the cost of healthcare through the Real Time Benefits Act, cosponsoring legislation that would allow Medicare to negotiate Rx drug prices and capping the cost of insulin at $35/mo. Beyond legislating, I believe in using the convening power of my office, and delivering tangible results to my constituents. To that end, my office has returned over $19.7 million owed to constituents from government agencies like the VA and Social Security Administration. I have also brought over $50 million back to my district – including $1.3 million to the Lansing Police Dept in the wake of George Floyd’s murder to hire more social workers to work alongside our police officers.I’ve hosted many events in Washtenaw County – both during and before my campaign for Senate. In August of 2023, I held an event in Ann Arbor with Rep. Jamie Raskin and Ann Arbor Reps Jennifer Conlin and Jason Morgan. I’ve also toured small businesses and co-ops across Washtenaw County, including the Growing Hope urban farm and the We The People Opportunity Farm in Ypsilanti. I’ve held multiple meetings with local leaders, including elected officials, to discuss issues specific to Washtenaw county, such as cost of living, and will continue doing so while I’m an elected official and long after.Since the beginning of my time as a Congresswoman, I have felt it important to mentor others, particularly women and service candidates on how to run for office. One example I am particularly proud of: I’ve had a close relationship with Sen. Sarah Anthony since her first run for office in 2018, and in her current position as the first Black woman to chair the Senate Appropriations Committee in Lansing. I’ve taken her on fundraising trips to New York, hosted events for her in DC, and invited her as my guest at the most recent State of the Union address. Washtenaw County has historically been a bastion of Democratic support in Michigan, proving the difference maker in many tight elections. Not only this, but the WCDP has been at the forefront of social change in Michigan. With its crucial position and effectiveness at organizing for Democrats, the WCDP’s endorsement is critical in mounting a comprehensive, statewide campaign. Specifically, WCDP’s help in organizing GOTV efforts, as well as spreading awareness about Michigan’s Senate race, would be incredibly helpful.Furthermore, the WCDP’s commitment to bringing its community together resonates deeply with my campaign and our values. Your routine Environmental Council, Black Caucus, and community meetings are an example that many should follow. Finally, young voters have proven critical to victory in previous elections. Given the unique challenges of this election cycle, WCDP is uniquely positioned to bring young voters into our efforts to keep Donald Trump out of the White House.Since I left the national security world, I’ve spent my time meeting with parents, teachers, business owners, and community leaders throughout our state. I’ve worked with Michael McKissic, a father in Lansing who lost his son to gun violence and founded the Mikey23 foundation, to amplify his message and connect him with national organizations and efforts to reduce gun violence. I’ve also worked closely with Black community leaders in Wayne County to develop my Opportunity Agenda, which focuses on eliminating long-standing barriers to opportunity. This collaboration has been critical to creating a broader sense of connection between Michiganders and their elected representatives, and also serves to amplify the effectiveness of community members and organizers by coordinating their initiatives with federal efforts.I’ve been incredibly supportive of Democratic efforts across Michigan. In 2018, I was a strong supporter of Prop 2, which created an independent redistricting commission in Michigan. In 2018 I also supported Prop 3, strengthening our voter rules and allowing no-reason absentee voting in our elections. Finally, I have been a staunch supporter of women’s reproductive rights and Prop 3 in 2022, enshrining these rights in the Michigan constitution.n/aMore Candidate Info ↗️

When I am in Michigan I am out as often as possible to make sure I am in touch with local priorities and concerns. The 6th Congressional District is home to multiple front line races in the state legislature and competitive local races. Carrie RheingansMichigan House - District 47I am the best candidate to continue to serve as State Representative for House District 47 because my leadership style is one of inclusivity. I believe that the best legislation is crafted in partnership with the stakeholders most affected by it. I bring everyone to the table, both people who agree with my position and those who do not, and work to get the best possible end product that will help the greatest number of people. My constituents and everyone I have worked with in Lansing know that my door is always open and that I will gladly talk to anyone. Thus far, I have had 2 students shadow me this way I am seeking the endorsement of the WCDP because as an active member, I know just how important of an institution you are for our county. Our county party is the best in the state and you play a crucial role in getting out the vote for Dems up and down the ticket. As the most progressive county in Michigan, the WCDP's get out the vote effort can literally determine which way the state goes. In this election year, when democracy itself is on the line, your efforts will be pivotal for the country. Being endorsed by you would be an honor.Giving back to the community has always been incredibly important to me. As I mentioned before, I have previously served on the Washtenaw Emergency Medical Services Commission and Board of Health, and the Ann Arbor Dems Leadership Board. I have used my expertise in health policy to try to ensure that our county is as healthy as it can be. Beyond that, I have always been someone who has felt comfortable using my voice to help advocate on behalf of causes that we as Democrats hold dear. On the day of the Dobbs decision, I stopped campaigning and threw together a rally on the diag at U of M with Eli Savit and Katie Scott. The rally was attended by hundreds of community members and Congresswoman Dingell and provided an outlet for all of the anger and hurt that we were all feeling that day. I have supported Democratic candidates and causes for years. I was at the TCF Center in Detroit on November 4, 2020 to defend our democracy and make sure that every vote was counted. The day before, I had been a poll watcher with the Detroit NAACP, and I’ve served as a poll watcher and registered voters for elections since 2000. Eli SavitCounty Prosecuting AttorneyI have dedicated my career to public service. I formerly served as a law clerk to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, was a civil-rights and public-interest attorney, and started my career as a public-school teacher.Prior to being elected Washtenaw County Prosecutor, I served as the City of Detroit’s senior legal counsel, where I led criminal-justice reform work for Michigan’s largest city. In that capacity, I also led successful public-interest lawsuits against adversaries such as banks, the opioid industry, slumlords, and corporate polluters. In the Prosecutor's Office, we have prioritized the prosecution of gun crime, domestic violence, and sexual assault. At the same time, we've launched multiple successful programs that allow people dealing with behavioral health and substance-use issues to obtain rehabilitative services. We have also litigated multiple cases in support of reproductive justice, LGBTQ+ rights, worker and consumer rights, and gun safety.I have spearheaded various successful diversion programs aimed at promoting healing and rehabilitation, allowing individuals facing lower-level crimes to avoid criminal records. These initiatives boast a recidivism rate of less than 5%. Our Office now houses a Conviction Integrity and Expungement Unit, helping over 1,000 individuals clear old criminal convictions, & an Economic Justice Unit that addresses wage theft, consumer protection, and workers' rights. I have also litigated in support of civil rights, gun safety, & reproductive justice--including litigating alongside Governor Whitmer to prevent the criminalization of abortion in Michigan. Our office remains focused on gun violence, intimate-partner violence, and sexual assault. We work to support the most vulnerable victims of crime. We now have a specialized Sexual Assault Kit Initiative to handle "cold-case" sexual assault cases, and provide comprehensive support for crime victims in multiple languagesI have been a member of the Washtenaw Dems--and have been actively involved in the Democratic Party--since I moved back from DC in 2016. I have served on the Executive Board (as bylaws chair), canvassed and volunteered for multiple candidates, and have supported multiple candidates (and the Party) financially as well.Mentorship is one of my favorite parts of my job. During my first campaign, in 2020, we had over 100 high school and college-aged volunteers working for the campaign. I have stayed in contact with a great many of those volunteers and interns. Some continue to work in politics, helping local Democratic officials and Democratic candidates across the state. Others have started their career in the criminal-justice reform space. Still others have attended law school; I'm immensely proud that both my campaign manager and deputy campaign manager are recent law school grads (with the deputy campaign manager having accepted a job at the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office)! We also maintain a robust internship program in the Prosecutor's Office, and I take great pride in mentoring the young people that serve as interns. Several have returned to the Prosecutor's Office as full-time staff. Others--with whom I regularly keep in contact--have gone on to great success in the legal field.I am a lifelong Democrat, and a longtime member of the WCDP. Simply put, WCDP's values are my values, and I consider myself a part of the WCDP community. I have been a member of multiple nonprofit boards. I currently serve on the board of Women and Men Working For Change (an Ypsilanti-based community group) and have previously served on the boards of the FLY Children's Art Center, among other organizations. I regularly volunteer with community groups as well (including SafeHouse Center, Moms Demand Action, and others). I am also a lifetime member of the NAACP - Ann Arbor Chapter, as well as the ACLU. I have served as a pro-bono cooperating attorney for the ACLU on multiple cases, and also have volunteered each election cycle since 2016 as part of the Michigan Democratic Party's Voter Protection Team.I have supported too many Democratic candidates and campaign to count. My PAC, the Pursuit of Justice PAC, has endorsed and financially supported dozens of Democratic candidates across the state and the country. I have also canvassed for Democratic candidates for state Legislature and other positions across the state. And I regularly personally donate to candidates and to the Democratic Party.N/AMore Candidate Info ↗️
Alyshia DyerCounty SheriffI decided to run for this seat after the current Sheriff announced his retirement. After spending nearly a decade working for the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, I knew from firsthand experience that more of the same wasn’t going to cut it. It’s time for a new vision that prioritizes accountability and transparency. This office needs an experienced leader with direct, on-the-ground experience who has seen the gaps firsthand and knows what needs to change. The Sheriff's Office has been around since the 1800s, and we have never had a woman in this seat. There are currently no female Democratic sheriffs in Michigan. We need more women in law enforcement leadership to address gaps in handling domestic violence and internal harassment. My decade of experience working as a deputy sheriff at the Sheriff's Office, along with my recent experience as a therapist and licensed social worker, gives me the tools necessary to create a Sheriff's Office that truly puts people first.I plan to serve my constituents by implementing the following reforms:In-Person Visitation: I will reintroduce in-person visits at the jail. These visits reduce recidivism, strengthen family ties, and promote successful reentry.Racial Justice and Accountability: I will end coercive interrogation techniques, address racial disparities in policing, and stop collaboration with ICE.Environmental Protection: I will establish a Corporate Accountability Crimes Unit to enforce environmental laws and hold corporate polluters accountable.Community-Driven Approaches: I support unarmed community response and restorative justice for young people to enhance public safety and reduce reliance on punitive measures.Officer Mental Health and Wellness: Having officers working in our community with PTSD and a gun puts everyone at risk. I will ensure we are prioritizing the mental health and wellness of first responders so they can safely serve and protect our community.I have served as a precinct delegate since 2020 and I have led programs within WCDP that helped raise participation in the party especially in Eastern Washtenaw. I also helped distribute our voter guide last cycle, helped knock doors locally, and across the state to flip the house, and was a former organizer with the Defend Black Voters Coalition. Additionally, I was able to get resolutions passed through WCDP to support local community organizations fighting for more accountability in rescue plan dollars. I have also served on the county executive committee. I was a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor as an officer and mentored many youth that have been impacted by our legal system. This work brings home for me why change in our local legal system is important. One young person I mentored was getting into trouble–getting them opportunities and using restorative justice when they committed offenses kept them out of our legal system. Now, they are able to thrive in our community. My ability as a law enforcement leader to offer young people more opportunities has prevented harm associated with keeping them involved with our legal system.I also mentor other young women in politics and grassroots organizations. I am the person I am today because of strong women who have been in my corner. We must do better at collectively supporting women and non-binary people from historically oppressed or minoritized backgrounds. Politics, like policing, is embedded with classism, sexism, and racism and it is up to all of us to raise the bar in this arena.I value the ideals of the Washtenaw County Democratic Party and we are a more progressive democratic stronghold to help also support our party at the state level. The work that Washtenaw Dems has done in our community from voter engagement, to education, to advocacy is vital to our community growth as well as public safety. As a sheriff candidate I recognize how connected this is. For example, I want to limit petty traffic stops so we can focus on serious safety concerns more. The more you pull someone over, the less likely they are to vote. WCDP also values criminal justice reform and ensuring our basic freedoms here locally are protected. I have been a precinct delegate for two terms, I served on the Washtenaw County Community Action Board, and served on the Ford School executive committee at U of M.I come from a working-class family with many family members involved in Unions. I have picketed with GEO (my former Union) and AFSCME, working in collaboration with WeROC to mobilize people to participate in organizing for strikes, pickets, and bargaining. I have supported Sweetwaters and Starbucks workers in organizing and spoke publicly at a local Starbucks Workers United rally.I additionally brought together labor and community organizers in shared interests, especially involving WeROC’s organizing to protect a COVID test site from getting shut down by administrators during the pandemic in one of our local municipalities. My background as an organizer provides me with experience in building broader movements and bringing together community and labor organizers which has positive outcomes on all of our public safety. I have supported many candidates locally and beyond and have knocked thousands of doors to help keep Michigan blue. I also have held fundraisers and events to support Democratic candidates. I will follow state standards as prudent financial procedures will be a priority during my term.Throughout my voting career, I have always voted Democratic. I've been an Ypsilanti Township Precinct 1 delegate, voted for Democratic candidates, and assisted with local and state voter turnout efforts. As a Washtenaw County public employee, I've collaborated with the community, internal operations and administration, and across county departments to support and offer services and programs to Washtenaw County citizens. As a passionate advocate for ‘Good Government, and beyond my formal roles, I’ve informally mentored student leaders and current county workers across different domains, demonstrating a commitment to community well-being and financial transparency. I’ve mentored an individual in handling payroll, accounting and program management, this individual later advanced to become my successor. I provided guidance to another individual with aspirations in both political and professional realms within county leadership.I mentored on support to the operation of county administration and urgent response efforts. This individual now holds a role in county leadership and serves on a local board. Most recently, I’ve mentored the finance division, in handing contact and special project funding, when has contributed to success of financial management. Furthermore, I’ve actively encouraged young people to recognize the importance of voting and engagement in the political process.I embodied Democratic values, and I am asking for WCDP endorsement. As the Democratic candidate, I bring over 35 years of experience in county government. My expertise lies in financial and human resources. My comment lies in community well-being, and foreclosure prevention. I prioritize transparency, uphold ethical standards, and demand accountability in managing public funds. My leadership is rooted in ensuring equitable outcomes for our community. I firmly believe that collaboration with local organizations, businesses, and neighborhood associations drives investment and fosters innovation. Over the years, I’ve cultivated strong partnerships and remain dedicated to enhancing homeownership preservation programs. The endorsements I’ve received—from political organizations, public officials, business owners, neighbors, and residents—reflect my passion, experience, and effective leadership. I am asking the WCPD for endorsement to advance and strengthen the Democratic Party. For many years, I have devoted my skills, abilities, and energy to local organizations. I planned United Way's 'Stuff the Bus' activities, which collected school supplies for the county and expanded our reach to include additional buses. In addition, I organized activities such as kickball challenges and donation incentives, which raised contributions while also broadening our effect on community programs. As an active member of the Neutral Zone Board of Directors and the Human Resource Committee, I help to shape organizational governance. I also volunteer with 'The Sharp Steppers,' a dancing group that encourages individuals of all ages, abilities, and genders to line dance, which promotes social interaction and good health.I’ve actively participated in various Democratic campaigns across different levels of government—local, state, and federal. My involvement included door-knocking, canvassing, and working at polling stations for candidates running for positions such as commissioners, state representatives, sheriff, clerk, treasurer, and trustees. Additionally, I’ve written postcards and actively participated in Democratic organizing meetings, aligning our efforts with the goals set by national leadership. Currently, I am working with the Women for Harris in the post card initiative to mail post cards to swing states to boost voter turnout. noMore Candidate Info ↗️

I actively assisted various candidates with state legislative campaigns from 1996-2006. This office has allocating funding to housing & homelessness, adopted a millage for seniors, will open a community center on the eastern side of the county, and has allowed me to build relations with constituents that were hidden. My journey begin with the WCDP in 2020 as part of community engagement/outreach/events and however else I could be of use to the Democratic Party. My deep roots in the community and experience working closely with local residents give me a nuanced perspective on the issues that matter most, from rural infrastructure to agricultural concerns.Proven Leadership: I have demonstrated a strong track record of leadership and advocacy. My work in various local initiatives, from broadband to housing, has shown my commitment to addressing critical issues like mental healthcare, housing, and environmental sustainability. My proactive approach and ability to bring people together to find solutions make me a strong leader.Focus on Sustainability: My commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development aligns well with the values and needs of District 3. By advocating for sustainable practices and green initiatives, I support both the preservation of natural resources and the long-term economic health of the area.Advocacy for Rural Needs: I have been a vocal advocate for the unique needs of rural communities in Washtenaw County. I have worked on improving infrastructure, including road maintenance and rural broadband access, to ensure that residents in less urbanized areas receive the support they need.Enhanced Community Services: I have focused on expanding and improving community services, such as healthcare and mental health support. By advocating for increased funding and resources, I have helped to improve access to essential services, particularly in rural areas where such resources might otherwise be limited.Inclusive Governance: I have made efforts to ensure that governance is inclusive and transparent. I have encouraged community involvement in decision-making processes and have worked to make county government more accessible to all residents, ensuring that diverse voices are represented and heard from every corner of Washtenaw County. Helping her to understand the rural areas of our shared district and how best to connect with voters. The Washtenaw County Democratic Party represents values such as social justice, equity, environmental sustainability, and community engagement – all things that I stand for. By seeking this nomination, I show voters my alignment with these core principles and I will fight for real change in Washtenaw County. Democratic voters in District 3 are often frightened to show their support for the party. They don't understand what a large and growing base their is in the rural areas. With this nomination, I am able to give them the courage and determination to also raise their voices and inspire them to vote, volunteer, and run for office. Many on the ballot this year looked to my continuous wins in rural Washtenaw as inspiration to also put their hat in the ring. With this nomination, I hope to inspire even more in the rural areas to fill the ballot and give votes a real choice. I have been involved in a number of local initiatives from entrepreneurship to LGBTQ+ organizations. I coach, raise funds, host events, and more to support work in our community.I have supported nearly all Democratic candidates in rural Washtenaw County (I say nearly as you are forced to pick one in a Primary). I have knocked doors, raised funds, or volunteered at the polls for Sue Shink, Carrie Rheingans, Jason Morgan, Donna Lasinski, Derrick Jackson, Arieanne Slay, Susan Estep, Justin Hodge, Annie Somerville, and others. Caroline SandersCounty Commissioner - District 4As the incumbent running for a third term, I am the best candidate for district 4 commissioner because I am honest, conduct myself at all times with integrity, challenge the status quo of priviledged behavior that is pervasive in many areas of government. I have and continue to be a champion for everyone, especially marginalized and vulnerable people.I promised my constituents in my first campaign that I would be responsive, work on their behave and be honest with them when and if I'm unable to deliver what they ask for. I have and continue to keep that promise. A few examples of my efforts include advocating against the expansion of the Ann Arbor airport, inquiring and advocating for drainage support of Stonebridge, the creation and promotion of the Mobile Support Services Initiative, advocating for the implemenation of the MAG salary survey findings, being a staunch and active supporter of the Eastside Community and Recreation center.I have volunteered with WCDP for every Presidential election since Obama and since 2020 I have played an active role in the WCDP through volunteer hours, donations and service on the Eboard.I have and continue to mentor community members as well as potential and current public servants.Because I am committed to and practice the stated values of the Democratic party and I "earn" the endorsement consistently.By being present throughout the county and supporting various programs, events and county residents with and without formal invitations.I have 41 year history of supporting and voting for Democratic candidates that demonstrate commitment to the values and provisions of the party and it's members. I have also been active in the Washtenaw County Democratic Party Black Caucus and currently serve as the Chair. As chair of WCDPBC, I have with the support of my Eboard instituted candidate forums, offered informational guest speaker sessions, partnered with three other major county Black Caucus chairs to secure GOTV funding, and I have actively supported multiple candidates through endorsement and donations.Well, I wouldn't be an effective Dem if I weren't accused of some sort of wrongdoing. I exceeded the 2023 commissioner travel allowance and am currently repaying the overage.More Candidate Info ↗️
Justin HodgeCounty Commissioner - District 5Experience matters. As your County Commissioner for the past four years, I have been honored to work on bettering our community for all. I know firsthand where we have made improvements, but also know where work is left to be done. This knowledge of how to resolve issues from within, what stakeholders need to be engaged, and understanding of county processes make me the best candidate. From expanding broadband access for rural Washtenaw residents in Augusta Township to working to make an eastern Washtenaw recreation center come to life for Ypsilanti Township residents, I have spent every day in public service focused on improving the health, wealth, and safety of my community. If elected, I am laser-focused on continuing in this mission.I have served on the WCDP board for multiple terms and am currently the Vice Chair of the county party. In my day job, I serve as a professor of social work at the University of Michigan, working with students who have specific interest in macro-level social work at the intersection of providing services and policy.I am seeking this endorsement to show voters that I share their values and their political viewpoints and will faithfully represent them on the County Commission. My service goes beyond elected office and I regularly attend and participate in meetings and organizations which aim to better the lives of my constituents. From food banks to religious organizations it is vital that elected leaders contribute to their community and I have and will continue to be an active participant in these ways. I have a strong history of supporting democratic candidates and causes through my work as a board member of the WCDP. Whether by attending fundraisers, knocking doors, promoting candidates, or helping to advise first-time candidates, I am proud of my years-long record of supporting our local party and causes.N/AMore Candidate Info ↗️
Annie SomervilleCounty Commissioner - District 6I am running for re-election because I am committed to further enhancing human services, improving access to housing, and providing robust support for youth and older adults in Washtenaw County. I do this work because it’s personal. Growing up, I experienced periods of extreme poverty. I know what it’s like to experience food insecurity, lack of access to water or electricity, and unstable housing. I watched my Mom struggle with substance use issues as well as housing stability. In 2008, after two years of sobriety, my mom passed away during a period of homelessness. My lived experience has guided me to prioritize human service needs in our community and shows through the work done over the last 6 years in public service.Since being elected to the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners in 2022, I have been steadfast in making sure that residents in my district are being represented and that I am using my to get the county to invest more in human services. Together with community support, we have been successful in increasing the amount of money that Washtenaw County Government invests in housing and homeless, nutrition access, youth programming, and services for seniors.I’ve been involved with the WCDP since 2018 by actively attending meetings, participating in fundraisers, forums, and encouraging community members to join. I have actively recruited first-time candidates to run for local office, and have helped to encourage diverse members of the community to join appointed and volunteer boards. The Democratic Party represents diverse values which aim to build a better community, and I share many of these values. I am seeking this endorsement to communicate these shared ideals with the voters of my district.I am very engaged in my community. I am a board member of We the People Opportunity Farm, and in the past, I have volunteered at the Ypsilanti Historical Museum and Chaired Ypsilanti’s Bicentennial Celebration. I regularly support organizations in my community that do work to promote mentorships to youth, promote access to literacy, provide support for seniors, provide support for the formerly incarcerated, and work towards addressing environmental concerns. I have worked on democratic campaigns since 2016 across Washtenaw County and in marginal state legislative races. In the last 3 cycles, I have spent an immense amount of time traveling across the state of Michigan to help deliver democratic wins(most recently helping flip the state house and senate).No. But I don’t think this should be a question on the WCDP candidate questionnaire.More Candidate Info ↗️
Andy LaBarreCounty Commissioner - District 7I have served for almost 12 years and have had major successes in the areas of human service protection and expansion. I work hard and I'm honest. I am effective. People trust me. These things make me the best candidate for the 7th District of the BoC. Also, I am the only primary and general election candidate on the ballot, so I feel like I have a good case here. I have lead the efforts to ensure our safety nets remain strong and grow in their ability to serve our residents. The effort I have been most successful on has been the expansion of mental health services with the millage (authored original millage) and in increasing resources for these services in our budgets. I have also directly helped on tough issues like the winding down of CoFu and the implementation of NHSP, negotiation of our HSHV policies, and the Platt Rd. site and others. I served on the executive board from 2007 through 2012. I have been part of the county committee since 2013. I attend meetings and have spoken at meetings and helped get speakers. I have attended fund raisers and contributed to the party. I think there are four colleagues who would tell you I have directly helped them as they were new on the BoC in a way that helped them as they were first doing the job and become better at it. Those are Jason Morgan, Katie Scott, Justin Hodge, and Annie Somerville. I will not say this was mentoring but I will say I worked to be a very engaged and supportive fellow commissioner. As a Democrat, the party's endorsement speaks to my efforts to best reflect the policies and principals of our party and demonstrate my usefulness as a commissioner. I serve on the Washtenaw County Community Mental Health Board, I provide a large amount of personal time to the efforts related to being an effective commissioner, I speak at events as an elected official, and I frequently meet with local social service leaders and community group leaders to help them best succeed in any work related to the county. I work to put in place what I believe are the very best county policies.Since I turned 18 (year 2000) I have always supported Democratic candidates at the federal and state (Gore, Kerry, Obama, Obama, Clinton, Biden, Biden) (Stabenow, Granholm, Levin, Stabenow, Granholm, Levin, Bernero, Stabenow, Schauer, Peters, Stabenow, Whitmer, Peters, Whitmer) levels, and local level (. I have also actively supported causes our party stands for such as civil rights, voting access, environmental efforts, and pro-worker efforts. No. More Candidate Info ↗️
Yousef RabhiCounty Commissioner - District 814 years experience and a track record of always putting the People first! Over the last 14 year in office I’ve worked hard for my constituents. From creating the first municipal ID card in the Midwest, to introducing legislation to create a single payer universal healthcare system to sponsoring a bill that was signed into law that has reformed our criminal justice system for the better, I’ve been proud to be part of making our state a better place for all. I’ve been involved in WCDP for over a decade. Dozens of candidates, dem activists and now elected leaders have come to me for advice over the years, I have provided counsel and mentorship to them. Most recent examples are Alyshia Dyer and Morgan Foreman. WCDP is the lifeblood of the Democratic Party in our community. As a lifelong Democrat, this is of paramount importance My entire life is community engagement: Volunteering, regular public engagement sessions, political campaigns, meeting with and mentoring community leaders, activists and candidates, etc etc etc I’ve knocked thousands of doors for Dems from Houghton to Luna Pier and everywhere in between, donated tens of thousands of dollars to candidates and the Dem caucus/party and given countless hours of my time to help Democrats get elected. I have not. More Candidate Info ↗️
Katie ScottCounty Commissioner - District 9I have served three terms in this office so far and the institutional knowledge I have gained is invaluable. Moreover, my entire ethos is about caring for people and advocating for communities. This position is not just about holding office, but it goes to the core of who I am as a person. I want to see all of Washtenaw County prosper and create a robust system of health and human services where no one slips through the cracks. People and community are what drive me, not politics. In the past six years, we have created progressive programming to help all those in Washtenaw County. I am very proud of the iterative process the Washtenaw County Health Department used in its COVID response and proud of my role in helping with this as a part of the Public Health Board. The equity based approach we had with ARPA funds was also a benefit the community, and the Bridge Loan program I advocated we allocate funds for helps keep people in their homes. Our Parks systems is more robust than ever, and expansion of the B2B trail has been an important part of our work. I am also thrilled that we were able to acheive new collective bargaining agreements for workers at the county; after not negotiating for ten years, getting to a finished contract was a big deal. I will always be proud of my advocacy for labor, unions, and workplace democracy. I am always working for Washtenaw County in my role as an elected commissioner! I try to attend WCDP events whenever possible, but admittedly, I am not as active as I would like. I do have to balance having a full time job as a nurse, being a mom, and working as a commissioner. Because I often have different committees during the work for the county, I end up staffing in the ICU on the weekends, which precludes attending WCDP events. As part of the county, I serve on the Board of Public Health, the Community Mental Health Board, the Local Emergency Planning Committee, Homeland Securty, Washtenaw County Employees Retirement System Board, the Voluntary Employees Beneficiary Association, the Parks and Recreation Board, the Opioid Settlement Advisory Committee, the EMS Commission, and the Environmental Council. The best way I can say I have mentored others is by helping people with the election process. I have worked with several local candidates to help impart knowledge about election processes, timelines, and advice on running a successful campaign. I help them fundraise and connect people to community leaders. I admit that I find it imperative to help other women in this role and this has been a specific focus of mine. I believe that strong women help lift others, and I work to this end. The Democratic Party is my home. I have been asked if I would run as a member of a different party in the past, and denied the request. I find the big tent in the Democratic party most accurately represents my values. One of my favorite songs is "Everybody Eats at My House" by Cab Calloway, and that's how I feel about politics and it's how I feel the Democratic Party thinks as well: We are going to get you all fed and welcome everyone to the table. The WCDP is such an interesting mix of all the Democrats in Washtenaw County and I find it refreshing to hear multiple points of view and how people came to this party. I believe it is important to stand with those who have similar goals and we will never achieve anything as one lone voice. I would like endorsement because I believe the WCDP is the path to acheiving the progressive goals this community craves. One of the ways I do this is by finding places to mentor young people or support causes that help young people find their voice. I serve on the Board of Governors for the Martha Cook Building on campus because I believe in the creation and maintenance of women's spaces to help foster leadership and help these women find their voices, voices that can (still) too often be silenced by this world. I also am engaged in the my son's rowing club and currently service as the president of the club. I also have seen how sports can help develop resiliency and confidence, the ability to work successfully as a team, and the power of working toward a goal and acheiving it. The club is committed to the fact that no child should be denied an opportunity to row because of monetary reasons, I support this; so much so, I ran for a board position to help see that vision through. This could be a long answer. I am 51 and have a long history of supporting Democratic candidates and causes. If you ask my parents, it started long before high school, but the first protest I remember attending was in 1989 and inDetroit, when a group of us went to protest the Detroit Incinerator. It was my first inkling into the idea of environmental justice. I was keen letter writer and when I was getting married, I even penned a letter to President Bush, asking him to attend my LGBTQ committment ceremony so he could see an example of two people in love and a community that supported us. He didn't come. I have been on picket lines (my favorite), an escort at Planned Parenthood, and protests against the Iraq War in Ann Arbor, in Detroit, and in London. I knock doors for candidates and attend phone banks. And even more importantly, I sit down and talk to people confused about the Democratic party positions, and I believe I have even swayed a few voters our way. I do not think I have been accused of this. Some people think I am a bossy so-and-so, and I wear that hat with pride. Others have accused me of being in the pocket of labor, and to quote the words of our amazing Vice Presidential candidate who was accused of the same, "I'm not in the pocket of of Labor: I am the pocket!" Additionally, I am committed to maintaining fiscal responsibility and ensuring that WCC is responsive to the needs of the community.I stay in touch with local politicians during non-election years to advocate for the Washtenaw Community College community, ensuring that education remains a priority when opportunities arise to support WCC students. Additionally, I stay active in the community by attending events for various non-profit organizations, further supporting local causes and initiatives. As the leader of a real estate team in Washtenaw County for over 20 years, I have had the privilege of mentoring many new real estate agents, guiding them as they enter the business and helping them grow their careers. My commitment to mentorship extends beyond my team, as I regularly engage with real estate professionals across the country, offering advice and sharing insights to support their success. Eileen PeckWashtenaw Community College TrusteeSix out of seven of WCC's current Trustees live in the City of Ann Arbor. They have a very different view of WCC's mission. Sometimes, they don't fully grasp the struggle of people who live in Eastern Washtenaw County, even though United Way ALICE data show that 4 out of 10 households here function near or below the poverty line. Further, the Trustees don't see the magnitude of the housing and income inequalities between Eastern Washtenaw County and Western Washtenaw County or the fact that this gap is growing. (If they do, they're not advocating for the profound changes we need here.) I am the best candidate for the position because I live in Ypsilanti Township and see the challenges that residents here face. Having a voice at the table is the first step in correcting these issues. Most of Washtenaw County has no voice at WCC's table. As I mentioned, six out of the seven current trustees are residents of the City of Ann Arbor. The City of Ann Arbor provides about 35% of WCC's property tax revenues, but has 85% of the board representation. I plan to be the voice at the table for those communities that provide funding each year to WCC but have no say in how the money gets spent, or have no voice in getting a positive return on their investment in WCC.As I mentioned, I have written a blog daily for the last five years that touches on issues that face Washtenaw County residents. When my children were in school, I participated regularly in events there. I vote in all elections, and was active in supporting a new millage campaign for WCC in the 1990s. I don't know if this counts, but I was a Girl Scout leader.I would like the endorsement of the Washtenaw County Democratic Party because many people look to the WCDP for guidance in locating candidates with shared values. I support equality, personal freedom, and the middle class not because it is politically expedient but because these are my personal values. Outside of faith-based involvement, most of my interactions with the community are through my blog and through charitable contributions to causes I support.I am not a member of either party. I vote for the candidate(s) I think will do the best job in office. At some point - maybe 15 years ago - it became very evident to me that there was an ideological shift taking place in the Republican Party that did not align with my sense of what was right, fair, and equitable. After the Michigan GOP rammed through their Right-to-Work legislation (literally after hours in a lame duck session), and the actions of the Snyder administration triggered the Flint Water Crisis, I began to support (through voting and cash donations) exclusively Democratic candidates and causes because it became too dangerous to do anything else. Today, there is no such thing as a moderate Republican in office, and there is little room for compromise and bi-partisan cooperation. Our government was designed to work cooperatively, and without cooperation, we aren't getting anything done.I have never been accused or convicted of any wrongdoing or character-related issues.More Candidate Info ↗️
Jon MallekAnn Arbor City Council - Ward 2While I am the only candidate for the position I seek, I think I am the best candidate for Ann Arbor City Council Ward 2 because I plan to advocate for and listen to the residents of Ward 2, all while attempting to balance the current and future needs of Ann Arbor.I am seeking office for the first time. As such, I plan to do extensive outreach to keep my constituents informed, including a regular newsletter, community outreach events, and dialog sessions. I will then take the information and input I receive to influence my decisions on council. As a relevatively new resident of Washtenaw County, and new as of the pandemic, my involvement has been mostly limited to attending monthly meetings and candidate forums.I think the idea of mentorship is extremely important as it allows for education and experience-sharing in a safe, dedicated space. Most examples that come to mind are work related. For example, I have always advocated for hiring (paid) interns to allow them access to spaces they wouldn't otherwise have access to; I am then able to mentor and share my experiences with them to help foster their growth.I am seeking the endorsement of WCDP to gain the support and credibility the party can lend. While I am uncontested, I would like to tap into the brand and platform the party can provide. In turn, I hope to uphold the values and priorities of the WCDP in and outside of office.I do my best to remain involved in as many community spaces as possible. This can include attending and engaging at community events; it can also include volunteering, where I have enjoyed donating my time for primarily food- and -agricultural-based organizations like community gardens and climate groups.I have supported democratic candidates or nonpartisan but democratic-leaning candidates exclusively my entire life. This started with my own mother, who ran for county clerk in my home county in Wisconsin in 2006. As an active member of college democrats, I supported and campaigned for democratic candidates up and down the ballot in 2010 and 2012. Post college, I have helped fundraise and donated money to local democratic candidates. In the most recent election of 2022, I campaigned door-to-door for local state house and senate candidates.N/AMore Candidate Info ↗️
Brian MarlSaline City - MayorActually, I'm the only candidate - but I'm ideally suited to serve as Mayor due to my clear and consistent vision, and track record of delivering on promises and enhancing the quality of life for all residents of the greater Saline community. In 2024 I was able to participate in a unique program mentoring 80 local 4th graders. Working with their teachers, we created an immersive civics experience, culminating with them coming to our District Court to conduct their own mock trial. Throughout my entire adult life, I have mentored others, from being a scout leader, volunteering in the Ann Arbor Public Schools Be the Good program, and presenting at Safety Town. Sharifa Kerene Moore15th District Court - JudgeThe 15th district primarily handles evictions, lawsuits less than 25K, and minor criminal offenses. It’s where people either receive resources needed to move forward, or go deeper into the system. Our community has an affordable housing crisis; MI ranks dead last in crime victim services; charges are disproportionately pursued against black community members in Washtenaw Co.; and those who can afford counsel appear to have privileged access to the courts. I started my career representing hundreds of people who could not afford an attorney, including tenants and crime victims. I fought discrimination at the Dept of Civil rights. And since 2021, I’ve helped implement justice reform in Washtenaw.—first, behind the bench as a judicial attorney/juvenile referee and currently as the Director of Conviction Integrity at the Prosecutor’s office. If elected, the community can trust that I will work to guarantee equal access to justice for community members from all walks of life.As Judge, I will fortify our treatment courts; prioritize victim services; and continue justice reforms. While the 15th District Court has 3 treatment courts, they currently run on a shoestring budget. I will pursue funding and establish partnerships with community organizations to ensure that services are sustainable. I will establish local court rules that facilitate victim access to compensation and recovery support. I will work hard to connect with treatment court participants to help each find a path forward. I will not only use my landlord-tenant experience to increase eviction diversion and pro se support, I will also design a housing treatment court that provides judicial oversight over termination of tenancy cases involving low-income households. I will also work hard to promote alternatives to incarceration and absolutely minimize cash bail or other punitive measures that cause unfair collateral consequences. Since 2012, I have been heavily involved in the WCDP. I’ve supported several candidates by knocking doors, engaging in the endorsement process, and helping build the WCDP Black Caucus. I currently support the caucus endorsement committee. For example, prior to running for this seat, I helped establish policies and design an endorsement questionnaire for vetting applicants.I have been the beneficiary of several strong Dem mentors. My introduction to the WCDP was through a Justice Caucus training where I learned about grass roots organizing from Yousef Rabhi and gained important campaign expertise from Jeff Irwin. However, most importantly, I met many strong women like Barb Fuller who explained the distinct barriers placed before women candidates. Having had the opportunity to attend numerous campaign trainings, I’ve met with and shared my personal handbook, and encouraged and endorsed other successful candidates, including Linh Song, Carrie Rheingans and Ayesha Ghazi-Edwin. I also normalize mothering on the campaign trail. We see each other. We support each other. We know how hard it is to work, raise kids, and serve as community leaders. We keep at it to make sure children have role models and that women are represented up and down the ballot. While judicial candidates are required to be nonpartisan officials under Michigan law, I am seeking the endorsement of the WCDP to communicate to voters my shared values and desire to serve our community in a way which promotes justice, equity, compassion, and diversity.I play an active role in both community-based and statewide legal organizations. I served a four year term on the Ann Arbor District Library Board of Trustees. I’ve also served on the boards of the Jim Toy Community Center, Ann Arbor Human Rights Commission, Neutral Zone, Equality Michigan, and the LGBTQ+ Law Section of the State Bar. Finally, as an established leader in the legal field, I regularly share my expertise as both a speaker and author on issues such as bail reform, LGBTQ+ rights, and domestic violence.I serve on the editorial boards of legal journals for the State Bar’s LGBTQ+ Law Section, as well as the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan. I enjoy mentoring students, both through the pro bono project I founded and supervise at U-M Law School, as well as younger high school students participating in mock trials or engaging in leadership activities at the Neutral Zone.I work hard to support Dem candidates whether on the partisan or nonpartisan section of the ballot. For example, I have knocked over a thousand doors for Gretchen Whitmer, Tracy Van den Bergh, and Jimmie Wilson, Jr. Although I am a career public servant, I have also donated to numerous local and state Dem candidates. When not running for a judicial seat and limited by ethical constraints, I publicly endorsed Democratic candidates. I am always at the polls helping with GOTV, and have helped distribute the WCDP Voter Guide door-to-door. I signed and encouraged others to sign the reproductive health petition. I actively fought for reforms while on the Ann Arbor Human Rights Commission, including establishing a community-police oversight committee and supporting a ban on conversion therapy. Jinan Hamood22nd Circuit Court - JudgeI am rooted in this community, practice in this community, and have experience in all areas of law that arise before the Circuit Court - criminal, family, and civil litigation. My years of experience working directly with residents of Washtenaw County in our criminal legal system set me apart from my opponent because my practice is rooted in the community I hope to represent, and makes me uniquely qualified to understand where we need to improve as a court system. I believe that judges, like any other elected official, should serve transparently, with compassion, and with concerns of residents in mind. If elected, I would do just that. I would seek to ensure court services are accessible to more people by encouraging access to justice reforms, translating forms into more languages, and working to ensure people are not hindered by financial burdens to access the legal system. Furthermore, I would work to communicate changes via court social media and press release channels, and encourage my colleagues on the bench to do the same. Finally, I am committed to individual review of all manners with an open mind so all of my constituents feel heard - we must ensure that everyone is granted equal access to their day in court.I have attended meetings and events hosted by the WCDP in non-election and election years.I volunteer for mock trial/moot court, both for judging and for playing a role (client, witness, expert, etc.). When I’m assigned to a group as a participant, or during judging, I often share my contact information. I’ve had several students follow up and ask to meet at the conclusion of our work together. When we meet, I provide advice and access to connections, events, and continued follow up so long as the student is receptive. I do the same with new/young lawyers, and particularly women and women of color. I will invite a mentee to an event, introduce her to everyone I speak to, and often make reference to her if I’m presenting at the event. It’s important to have a more senior person in your profession to receive feedback and advice from. I’ve always had that and want to pay it forward. I am seeking the endorsement of the WCDP to communicate to voters that my judicial philosophy aligns with their values, and that I will be a judge focused on diversity, inclusion, compassion and reforms.Over the course of my professional life, I have been active in numerous organizations including nonprofits, bar associations, HOAs, and more. In every community I am a part of, I always try to give 110% and leave things better than when I first became a part of the group. While judicial candidates are specifically prohibited from endorsing or supporting candidates for partisan office under the Judicial Canons of Ethics, I can say that I have donated to and volunteered for Democratic candidates prior to seeking judicial office.N/AMore Candidate Info ↗️

Lonnie ScottDexter Township - SupervisorI am the only candidate in this race with experience on the Dexter Township Board and having run local government meetings when I previously served as the chair of Ypsilanti Township Park Commission.I was born and raised in Washtenaw County, and my wife, Heather, and I are excited to raise our family in Dexter Township. From 2013 to 2023, I led Progress Michigan, one of the state's largest progressive non-profits, fighting for better government transparency, paid sick time, higher minimum wage, and strong public schools. My work in the Michigan legislature with progressive leaders Alma Wheeler Smith and Jeff Irwin gave me valuable experience in public budgeting and the importance of listening to our community. As a current Dexter Township Trustee, I'm proud of what my colleagues and I have accomplished which are too numerous to list here, but include improving local roads, preserving farmland and open space, hosting several clean-up days, and increasing transparency and communication. I am eager to continue my work expanding our cellular service across the township and to continue serving as one of Dexter Township's representative on the Dexter Area Fire Department board. Our board is very active and continuously working to make Dexter Township a better place for all of our residents.I have previously served on the WCDP as vice-chair for communications, though that was many years ago. Recently, I presented at a WCDP meeting about Townships in the county being ready for change and have helped several dem candidates file and run for township board positions. I have also been engaging with the WCDP chair to be helpful with other party initiatives. As the Executive Director of Progress Michigan for a decade, I mentored numerous individuals, fostering their growth both personally and professionally. After leaving Progress Michigan I have been consulting on several campaigns, helping others learn new, cutting-edge techniques for voter communication. In addition to my professional life, I volunteer as a youth hockey coach in the Chelsea area. This experience allows me to mentor young athletes, teaching them the values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. I've served as a volunteer coach for six years now and have coached some of the same kids the entire time, it's been incredible to watch them succeed and grow. For over 15 years I have also been a college leadership speaker. Traveling to college campuses around the country training young adults in leadership and political activism. The members of WCDP fight for the same values I share every day. They are the backbone of our party and share their talents and time in an effort to make long-lasting change. I am proud to have been supported by the WCDP previously and would be honored to their support again. When I was elected to fill a vacancy on the Dexter Township board in 2022, I immediately went to work setting up additional community engagement events. We've hosted an outdoor family movie night at the Township Hall, several coffee chats with the Trustees, marched in parades, hosted booths at community events, and held several community engagement sessions around different topics. In addition, I have supported other efforts such as community clean-up day and strategic planning sessions. I also serve as one of two Dexter Township Representatives on the Dexter Area Fire Department Board. In addition, I am a volunteer hockey coach with the Chelsea Hockey Association. I have volunteered on Democratic campaigns since before I could vote. In a professional role I have worked on several progressive ballot measures and now consult with campaigns and organizations to help them communicate with voters better. While most of my work with Progress Michigan was on the Independent Expenditure side, I led one of the largest progressive SuperPACS in the state, supporting progressive candidates up and down the ballot.N/AMore Candidate Info ↗️
Alicia AbbottDexter Township - TrusteeI have a long history of running a national contracting firm. I know how to analyze and make decisions whether financial or otherwise. I have proven my worth while serving on the Planning Commission for the township in which I am running for Trustee. I have been attending the Board of Trustee meetings for over 3 years in order to gain knowledge in how our township runs. I also serve on local roads committee and have been involved in strategic planning sessions. In addition, I am always excited to volunteer on the Township clean up days. This includes working in the pouring rain for hours all for the betterment of our residentsI plan to have a dedication open line of communication. I believe that our current board has made amazing strides in making the lives of residents better. However, I want to take that success and drive it further. Areas I want to work on is zoning, emergency preparedness, continuing the work on our local roads, expanding the flow of information, to name a few. I have supported local democratic candidates through voting, financial donations and sign placements in my yard for years.I have been mentored by several democrats in the WCDP. However, I have not had the opportunity to mentor a specific person within the WCDP.I am seeking the endorsement of the WCPD so show residents that I am a serious candidate. I want voters to see that I am here for them and that with the backing of the WCPD I will be able to serve them in a much broader way.I have been engaged in my community for as long as I have lived here. At one point, DTE, our electric utility provider, left our area without power for almost an entire week. In that time, a lady with whom I had already been helping was stuck in her apartment with no electric. This meant that she could not charge her wheel chair. She could not charge her cell phone. This left a vulnerable citizen in the dark. I spent that week taking battery back ups to her home morning and night swapping them out in order for this person to have a way of keeping her cell charged and her wheel chair charged. I also had a wheelchair ramp added to my back door so that if DTE fails in their responsibilities, I can bring this person into my home for safety. This is one example of when I see a need and can help, I step in and roll up my sleeves. I have supported democratic candidates through my financial support, my openness to have an abundance of democratic signs in my front yard. I gave to Hilary Clinton’s campaign, Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign, and most recently, giving to local candidates for Sheriff and Supervisor. I believe that starting with local campaigns is how you can be the difference.NoMore Candidate Info ↗️
Karen NolteDexter Township - TrusteeI am running as an incumbent in 2024 for a Trustee position in Dexter Township . During the past 3 1/2 years, it has been an honor to serve our community in this position. Our administration has been extremely active and my desire is to complete or finalize some of the projects which I am currently working on and to launch new initiatives. My 3 1/2 year history already working as a Trustee accompanied with my business ownership background supplies me with the ability to juggle many projects while paying attention to the budget and it's outcomes. I stay focused to transparency, financial governance and community. Additionally, I wish to complete the projects I have in process including: broadband to our underserved residents, continuing to improve our communication methods, finish restoring our historic cemeteries, and improving our waste water treatment plant. Additionally, we need to look forward to our traffic patterns and create some solutions to our challenges.I created the new communication methods to our residents: our monthly email "in the loop" updates and printed newsletters. Additionally, I initiated the Hudson Mills Metropark pass program, launched the restoration of our historic cemeteries and our Fall Clean-Up Days. Of course, each project is a group effort, garnering support of the Broad or building volunteer teams to complete the tasks. I support financially sound projects that create wins for our community, like improving our roads, community engagement evenings, balancing our budget and smart investment of those dollars, emergency planning. Financial oversight is our main focus as a Trustee to protect our residents.I support the Democratic process, candidates, and overall philosophy of our party with my voice, my dollars and my vote. I have built a couple volunteer teams within our township to assist with the recycling film project, to assist with rebuilding our cemeteries and to work on our clean-up days. I will continue to bring people into our roles in the township and look for younger people to assist and fulfill future roles. As a life long Democrat and elected official, I seek the backing of the organization that I support and follow. Our job is to work to improve our residents quality of life and get assist getting out the vote for our President.Besides my approximate 15 hours per week working on Township community projects, I also an involved in creating our Lake Association and completing water quality testing to collect data for future use in conjunction with the Huron River Watershed Council. Additionally, I organize and maintain our private road which serves 38 homes in our neighborhood. I have been a life long Democrat, supporting the party agenda and progressive agendas. As a gay citizen, I have fought for our rights and equity for over 50 years. People think I am political, but I have to be to fight for my rights as a citizen. I have worked collecting signatures on petitions, such as gerrymandering. One reason to rerun within this election cycle is to work to get the Democratic voters out to the polls, so important at this juncture. N/AMore Candidate Info ↗️

Most recently my work has focused on federal, state, and local public gardens, land conservancies, parks and trails. I wish WCDP would provide better support for newly elected officials. I could have used the support. Our local roads management is being used as a model for other townships throughout Washtenaw County. We developed a rubric for prioritizing road repair, developed a model for multi-year capital budgeting, and established a local roads committee to ensure public engagement. We have met with trustees from several townships, referred to us by the Road Commission, to distribute our best practices countywide. The democratic slate has been much more proactive in improving quality of life for Dexter a townships than the prior republican slate. Your endorsement will help us get re-elected and continue to do our good work. In addition to serving as a trustee, I am a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters. I have a low-income little sister for whom I serve as a mentor and adult ally. I also work hard to offer her enrichment opportunities to which she would not otherwise have access. I am working toward helping her achieve goals that she and her parents set out for us at the beginning of our match over a year ago. I have supported elected officials (almost all democrats) since the start of my career. That is my profession. Eric John RobertsLodi Township - ClerkWith a Graduate Certificate in Election Administration, and being one of just 60 Master Municipal Clerks in Michigan's history, I have the skills and experience to make this Clerk's Office work well for all residents and expand understanding of elections all the while. Currently, the Lodi Township Board violates the Open Meetings Act routinely and I, having studied this law in depth in previous elected roles, will fix this and train the entire board (and public) on this law to ensure compliance. I intend to make Township government far more transparent by reworking the outdated Lodi Township website, streaming meetings, publishing FOIA responses, and other best practices in transparency so that more residents can be engaged here in local decisions.Next March, for "Sunshine Week", I intend to do a FOIA training directed at the public wherein I go over all the types of information that the FOIA gives a public the right to, and how to best use the FOIA to hold government accountable. This includes subscribing to regularly produced documents for up to six months at a time, like a board packet for any public body. I will build a newsletter for residents that shares what the Township Board is working on and solicits feedback from residents on local issues. I will propose new policies that require streaming and recording of public meetings and policies requiring all boards that report to the Lodi Township Board to fully comply with the OMA (not currently required). We will implement best practices in transparency and communicate the shortcomings in current law to our legislators to strengthen democracy statewide.Since moving here in 2023, I have been engaged in WCDP programming and helped support the priority setting for the newly established Young Democrats Washtenaw. I have been vocal about recruiting candidates in Washtenaw townships that now lean Democratic. When I was a school board member for Kenowa Hills Public Schools, I routinely encouraged other young people to run for office as I had. Upon a resignation to the Walker City Council, I encouraged Carol Glanville to apply for this role and shared my experience as a public official in the area. Then-Commissioner Glanville, now a State Representative, and I met with precinct delegates to encourage them to run for office or be part of one of Walker's many appointed boards and commissions. I value the many ways that folks can be involved in government and often recruit folks to run for office or seek appointment to a public body, if campaigning/spotlight is not for them.As the sole Democratic candidate for Lodi Township Clerk, I would like the backing of WCDP to show that I pursue the ideals of justice, fairness, and supporting democratic elections. We need more bright, hardworking election officials that want to show the community more of the process and work with other election administrators to continually improve the experience for voters at every step of the electoral process.I am a trained Legal Observer and the President of the UToledo National Lawyers Guild, an organization that defends the right to assembly and speech against repressive police forces. I intend to do defense, mass defense, when I receive my J.D. As a baseball umpire assigner, I have always fought for increased wages for my independent officials. Additionally, I will raise $80,000-$100,000 for Michigan charities this calendar year as a supplier of charitable gaming, wherein I also employ a dozen poker dealers and we do not ask about felony status on applications. When in office, I would love to organize a "Pull Over Prevention" (POP) session where volunteers fix up small issues on cars to make it less likely they will have a negative interaction with police at a traffic stop. When I was 12, I went to my first Grand Rapids City Commission meeting to give public comment asking the City to "ban the box," making it unlawful for businesses in the City to ask on employment applications whether someone has been convicted of a crime. At age 17, I met with my Republican state representative and asked him to make noise about overturning Citizens United v. FEC (2010). He said he liked the idea, but I was the only person who ever asked him about it so he declined to do anything. Later that year, I got the City of Cedar Springs to pass a resolution opposing Citizens United v. FEC and asking the MI Legislature to propose changing the US Constitution to defeat Citizens United. Suffice to say, I have tried to tackle injustice where it lay throughout my life. Specific to the party, I previously served as YDM's electoral director and I served briefly on MDP State Central Committee.I was suspended from high school, but that's about it. I defended a classmate against a teacher that was demeaning and rude to her.More Candidate Info ↗️
Barry WauldronLodi Township - SupervisorUnder Michigan law, the township supervisor is also the head assessor. Most supervisors have no assessing training or experience and hire an assessor to perform that work.. I am a Level III advanced certified assessor and can bring an experienced eye to the assessing practices in my township. I also have a masters degree in urban planning and can contribute that education to the master plan and comprehensive planning process. I believe our township government needs to communicate more consistently and transparently with the constituents and I plan to use my teaching expertise to improve communication and our efforts to be a useful source for information. I also look forward to participating actively in the master plan development process, achieving the goals of the plan that the residents helped define. I've lived in Washtenaw county for the last 10 years, and have been a municipal employee for much of that, working with county equalization on many occasions. I have not been directly involved with the WCDP prior to now, but have been a registered Dem my whole adult life. I was a lecturer at UofM Dearborn for 12 years, mentoring numerous students in my time there. I supervised student senior projects, research efforts, and actively facilitated them learning more about their local government functions. I have also held supervisory positions that included training and developing staff members under my supervision. I am running for Lodi Township Supervisor as a Democrat, the first to attempt this in some time. I have a supportive situation with fellow Dem running mates, and the numbers seem to indicate we have a good chance of flipping a traditionally Republican township. I would like the endorsement and support of the WCDP to run a successful campaign and bring a more progressive agenda to the township. I work as a municipal assessor, appraiser and code enforcement officer, so I am regularly engaging with residents and property owners about property tax matters, ordinance issues, etc. I consider this work to be valuable and essential public service that I've dedicated myself to. I have always voted Democrat in local and national elections. I was actively involved as a union organizer for 10 years and support organized labor and the right of workers to form unions. I am an environmental activist and have spent a lot of time advocating for renewable energy investment, carbon emission reductions, wildlife habitat protection, agriculture and sustainable food system reforms, etc. My last traffic citation was about 10 years ago. I've never been arrested, charged with, or formally accused of committing a crime. I've never been named as a defendant in a lawsuit. More Candidate Info ↗️
Leslie BlackburnLodi Township - TrusteeI’m a passionate advocate for community empowerment, bringing a unique fusion of technical expertise and nature-inspired wisdom to my campaign for public office. I have a robust background and over fifty years of life experience including fifteen years in corporate engineering and management, and another fifteen as an entrepreneur in empowerment, healing and body sovereignty work. I’ve honed problem-solving skills, community facilitation, and strategic planning abilities, offering efficient solutions to intricate challenges. I am now answering my calling to serve both the land and the broader human community, which led me into the realm of politics. My vision emphasizes care and connection, aiming to create governance that is fair, transparent, inclusive, and prioritizes the needs of all residents. My approach is characterized by a blend of joy, wisdom, and a commitment to care—care for our bodies, for each other, and for the planet we call home.I am seeking office for the first time. I intend to serve by listening, creating accessibility and care, paving the way for mentorship and learning, co-creating changes to legislation by collaborating with the public, supporting land conservation and preservation options including creating more public access to nature and its healing properties. I will support an overhaul to our website and communication practices to allow the public to have access to information and have their needs heard and incorporated into decision making for our community.I volunteered handing out Voter Guides in my region in 2020. And during non-election years I’ve brought repair to the land by planting trees and native plants, supported the Washtenaw County Conservancy District native tree and plant expos, and borrowed tools from their resource library. I’ve participated in water testing to support clean water in our area. I volunteer with Washtenaw County Bird and Nature Alliance to count birds in Lodi Township during May migration count. I also collaborate with Huron River Watershed Council, River Raisin Watershed Council, Legacy Land Conservancy and other preservation and conservation organizations in our county to support land preservation advocacy and actions. Also - I have advocated at our county meetings listening and amplifying black voices to more equitably make decisions given the disparity of needs between the east and west sides of the county.I’ve mentored others at many points during my life. Back in engineering, as a part of the Society of Automotive Engineers, I volunteered to share about engineering with students in middle school classrooms. I’ve spent many years co-creating community and have been in mentor roles supporting young, queer land and garden tending and herbalism. As a successful entrepreneur I’ve also mentored others to learn how to start their own businesses/self-employment. I’ve also been an anchor in intentional community building by offering a caring, grounded presence. With this presence along with skills and training, I listen and facilitate social technology practices that support getting to know each other’s worlds and build intimacy and connection in communities. This then builds a fertile soil that reduces conflict and builds trust together.I align with the values of the WCDP and am seeking your support in the Voter Guide to win this election and bring these values into action in our local township. We have only had unopposed republican candidates for all seven Board positions for decades, yet our township has proven to vote democrat in all cases it’s had the chance to since 2018. It’s time to give our community the chance to vote dems for our Township Board. I am running with an ally group, we six democratic candidates are running for progress and sustainability in Lodi Township. Team Progress is a group of caring and skilled public servants that are small business leaders, lifelong learners, and active listeners. See Progress4Lodi.org for more about our group of six.I’ve been an active participant and community advocate in our Lodi Township Planning Commission and Board meetings for the past several years to support our community voices to be heard. As mentioned above I am also a founding member of Livable Lodi. Community building with collective liberation at its core has been a major focus of mine in the past five years. I have been active in co-creating a new culture of creative non-violence and sharing social technologies to support it. I’ve also been part of a team working to build a co-operative model of running NOW Studios as part of the Express Your Yes foundation in Ann Arbor. When I began voting at age 18 in college, I left my parents’ republican influences and felt into what was true for me, which meant voting dem where possible. I avoided taking a public political stance for years, something I now see as connected with “white silence is violence” and a fallout of white privilege. Then I had a wake up call in 2018 where I began to see my own impact as a white person and began doing the work to unwind racism from my body and from our systems & structures. This collective liberation work is now central to all I do. I began tithing in 2019 to support social & racial justice, and continue to this day, to pay a percentage of my income to families & orgs that support folx disproportionately impacted by systemic oppression: BIPOC, trans, queer. I'm now more clear and vocal with my support for environmental & social justice, anti-racism work, and humanity care. I also support fellow democratic candidates as one of an ally group of 6 running for Lodi Twp positions.NoMore Candidate Info ↗️
Steve MarshLodi Township - TrusteeI have worked and lived in Lodi Township for over 3 decades. Lodi Township is the place where my wife and I decided to start our family businesses and a 501(c)(3) non-profit. As the owner of small businesses, I have experience in accounting, HR, and management. All of these skills would help foster a professional environment at the Board of Trustees. As the founder for The Creature Conservancy, a non-profit focused on promoting conservation through education, I have always been passionate about bettering my community. I have spent the past 20 years waking up before sunrise every day to make sure that each animal has the highest standard of care. I have partnered with dozens of schools to ensure that kids have access to wildlife education. I have made my little corner of Lodi a space where people can become passionate about animals, people, and our planet. As a business owner and wildlife educator, I have the tools to make sure that Lodi puts sustainability and family businesses first.I am not a politician, but I have been attending local government meetings for long enough to know that people want elected officials who are clear, open, and communicative. As a wildlife educator, I spend my days taking confusing concepts and making them accessible for all. I hope to use this same skill on the Board of Trustees. I will always prioritize communication so that everyone’s voice is heard, especially those who are often ignored. Additionally, I would like to create more transparency so that community members can have access to what’s going on in the Township. It would be simple to update the Township website to make sure that residents can stay up to date on their concerns as well as get notified of upcoming hearings and meetings. I will prioritize the organization of documents and notes to keep a clear record of every issue before the township. We deserve a Board of Trustees who makes it possible for Lodi Township residents to stay involved in decision-making.I was born and raised in Washtenaw County and have always been a strong advocate for Democrats up and down the ballot. I have encouraged my neighbors to run for positions in the county as Democrats, such as Leslie Blackburn who I am running alongside in this race. Even if I am not elected, I will stay committed to supporting this party. At The Creature Conservancy, non-profit I founded, I work with lots of young people interested in conservation. It has been such an honor to help push their careers forward and teach them what I know about wildlife. I have taken my mentorship a step further with my coworker Alex Matelski, who I encouraged to run as a Democrat for the Lodi Township Board of Trustees. As a lifelong Democrat, when it came time to run, running as a Democrat was a no-brainer. The endorsement of the Washtenaw County Democratic Party would give me the credibility that I need as a first-time candidate. I would love to work alongside other local Democrats to ensure that we all succeed in November.Running a non-profit animal rescue and education center has been my way of contributing to my community for the past 20 years. Every kindergartener and first grader in our school district comes to The Creature Conservancy. This is the place where kids first learn the difference between mammals and reptiles. This is the place where students from University of Michigan come to expand their studies. This is the place where retired people come to volunteer. I am so proud to have created a place where people can give back to animals and the planet every day.I have been voting blue since I turned 18. I am proud to have donated to Democratic candidates candidates in the past and I will continue to do so. My daughter has been volunteering on democratic campaigns since she was 14 and every election cycle I am excited to help her and her candidate of choice knock doors and make calls.I do not have a criminal record, I do not use social media, and I have never worked in politics before.More Candidate Info ↗️
Alex MatelskiLodi Township - TrusteeFor too long, Lodi Township residents have felt unheard and unsupported by their government. Coming from a predominantly red area, I made a conscious effort to represent and advocate for progressive values in my personal and professional life. Sandra SchulzeSylvan Township - TrusteeMy previous elected experience combined with my current elected experience gives me the ability to understand how municipal government works. I feel I add value by looking for ways that I can contribute to whatever effort I am involved with, be it a job, hobby or elected office. I saw that I could contribute to the Township by pursuing some the the issues myself, doing the "footwork" and then presenting the findings to the Bard of Trustees so the Board of Trustees could make a well-informed decision. Local government can be confusing and exasperating. My experience serving on boards and commissions in both a city and a township gives me a broader view of expectations. As a current officeholder, I made contact with the County DPW Director and the Manager of Recycling and invited them to a Board of Trustees meeting to speak about how the township can return recycling to the township. Currently, residents use bins that are paid for by other communities and there is a desire in the township that we should "pay our own way". Invited a local land preservationist to a Board of Trustees meeting to explain land preservation ordinances and costs. The result will be farmers and other landholders who are looking to sell their land will have additional options. I supported Jennifer Granholm and supported her by attending events in the city I lived in. When John Dingell's district was combined with another, I supported him by attending his events. I will do the same with Debbie Dingell. I always have campaign/issue signs in my yard.Advised two people running for office about forming a committee and preparing a statement about why people should vote for you. When I was elected to my current position, I did a Zoom presentation at my place of work to encourage others to run for office and serve on boards and commissions in their communities. This was an international department. I asked them to think about how their particular expertise and worldview could help their communities move forward.I enjoy being part of a group where I can share a mission and goals. I feel the Democratic Party cares about the lives of the citizens of our country and I a proud to be associated with, and recognized by them. I also volunteer (working or taking minutes at meetings) at the Chelsea Community Garden.I live in the country on a busy road. I am fiscally responsible, practical and transparent. In my past four years as Trustee, I spent a lot of time listening and learning how to support the ZBA and the Planning Commission. I helped write a grant to obtain matching funds to fix culverts in Webster Township. I advocated for a public meeting where residents can ask the Board questions, and I will continue to advocate for those opportunities. I am direct, and speak my mind--even when it's hard--in order to facilitate difficult decisions.I was an elected Delegate for two years in Webster Township. I started Dexter Indivisible and worked closely with WCDP to coordinate several activities and actions. My husband is currently a delegate and we have volunteered for several activities: tables, literature, voter guides, etc. I have been very concerned about the Democratic race for Supervisor in Webster Township. As a result, I helped recruit a candidate--Mike DeAngelo. I have been working closely with him in his race. In addition, I started Dexter Indivisible. While not solely a Democrat group--it was mainly composed of Dems. We did a lot of really great work together. I helped create a leadership group. In my professional life, I am a nonprofit leader, and I have mentored many, many social workers in their career.I have been volunteering since high school (the late 80s). I worked on Levin's campaign, and several after that. I was appointed to the Board of Social Work by Governor Whitmer and I previously worked at Planned Parenthood. I embody the values of the WCDP, and I would like others to know that too.I am the President of the Dexter District Library Board. I am a Whitmer appointee to the Michigan Board of Social Work. My family is a licensed foster home for teenagers. I'm engaged with Dexter Community Schools. I am a licensed Masters Social Worker. As mentioned, I started and am still involved with Dexter Indivisible.I am previous employee of Planned Parenthood of Michigan, and a strong supporter of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ people. I have been a Democrat since childhood. In the 90s, President Bush came to my high school to campaign. My choir was asked to sing for him, and I refused. This garnered a lot of negative media attention for my family. But it galvanized me.I have been involved in many campaigns since then. Door knocking, phone calls, petitions, parades, tables. Whatever can be done. None.More Candidate Info ↗️
Brant SavanderWebster Township - Trustee.EDUCATION: Texas A&M, Maritime Systems Engineering. BSc. 1989.University of Michigan, Naval Architecture. MSE. 1990.University of Michigan, Naval Architecture. Ph.D. 1997.EMPLOYMENT:Principal Research Scientist, Owner. Maritime Research Associates. Ann Arbor, Michigan.BACKGROUND:Registered Professional Engineer. State of Michigan.Advisory Board, Naval Architecture Dept., University of Michigan.National Parks Foundation, Member.Whitewater Rowing School Qualified, state of Colorado.TOWNSHIP EXPERIENCE:Board of Review, Webster Township, 2017-2018.Board of Trustees, Webster Township, 2019-2020.The combination of my professional, personal, and local government experience offers a unique skill set to serve and give back to the local community. The fundamental guiding principal for township management is to live the Master Plan. The Master Plan is developed in conjunction with township residents and should also be continually updated. Two of the most common comments made by residents is to maintain the country character and keep improving the roads. The country character is best maintained via three township management mechanisms, which includes Farmland and Open Space Preservation (Proposal B), balanced zoning planning, and a zoning ordinance that balances property owner rights with adjacent landowner rights and interests. The road question is addressed by planning and available financial resources. The goal is to establish a 3, 5, and 10-year plan to maintain the gravel roads and culverts in conjunction with the road commission. If Proposal A passes, the maintenance cycle for the 41 miles of gravel roads would be every 3-5 years. If Proposal A does not pass, the maintenance cycle would increase to 8-9 years. This has been limited as I am a new WCDP as of August of 2024.My wife Connie and I are both Naval Architects and graduates from the University of Michigan Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. I have taught selected courses through the years as an adjunct lecturer. Most importantly, we have help and mentored countless students and recent graduates in our field. Jokingly, much of the mentoring starts with buying the students lunch or dinner. In all cases, we help the students and recent graduates with navigating the early parts of their careers, and always make ourselves available for any questions that may arise. The integrity of the WCDP is clear and on full display. My interest in the endorsement is to be associated with a like minded organization from an integrity, ethical, and fair-dealing perspective.BACKGROUND:Advisory Board, Naval Architecture Dept., University of Michigan.National Parks Foundation, Member.Whitewater Rowing School Qualified, state of Colorado. The vast majority of my time outside of my profession as a naval architect is spent either giving back to our profession or giving back to where I most enjoy my personal time - on a river in the back country at one of our beautiful National Parks. In the latter case, our membership with the National Parks Foundation is central to that effort of wanting to maintain the mesmerizing resources for future generations. My support of Democratic candidates has been limited to financial donations to both the Biden (2020) and Harris (2024) campaigns.I have never been accused or convicted of any wrongdoing.More Candidate Info ↗️
Torchio FeasterAnn Arbor School Board - TrusteeI am the best candidate for the position because I am passionate about children and I have the knowledge and experience to move our school district forward during the remainder of my term. Although I have only been in my role for 10 months I have been thrown into the fire. I have had to make the difficult choices around our budget to maintain the districts viability while positioning us for a bright future. I have also strived to encourage more collaboration and engagement amongst the trustees which is critical to our future success.I have been involved in the WCDP primarily through the Black Caucus. During my nearly 4 years back in Washtenaw County I have participated at meetings and I have served on the bylaws committee where I assisted in amending our bylaws. In my role as a public defender I get the opportunity to mentor college and law school students on a bi-annual basis. I make it my goal to find out what our interns our hoping to accomplish and I give them every opportunity to learn our craft. I also have mentored as a big brother in the Big Brother & Big Sisters of Flint Lunch Buddy Program, as a teen jury judge for the Genesee County Community Action Resource Department, and coach of the Flint Northern, Northwestern and Davison High School Mock Trial teams. I believe exposure is the only think that limit peoples dreams so I do my best to aid our youth and expose them to a number of great opportunities. That program seeks to clear those warrants andprovide quality affordable housing for our unhoused population.Currently, I serve as treasurer of Vanzetti Hamilton BarAssociation and I am a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,Incorporated. My history in supporting Democratic candidates and causes goes back to my college days at Eastern Michigan University. At that time I began my advocacy doing everything from knocking doors for candidates to riding the bus to Washington D.C. to march at the Supreme Court. That advocacy has continued by supporting Democratic candidates with my voice and my donations while marching in the streets after the death of George Floyd. I believe all citizens need to use their voices to advocate for the change they want to see in the world. NoMore Candidate Info ↗️
Megan KanousAnn Arbor School Board - TrusteeI am running at this time because I care about our schools in Ann Arbor and believe that I would be a fair and reasonable voice on the board. My ability to listen, give perspective and consider the greater impact of decisions made while maintaining a respectful discourse with colleagues would be an asset for our community. I have enjoyed learning about our schools and AAPS Community through my participation in the PTO and the PTO Council and Our Students, Teachers, Parents and Caregivers can all play a role in shaping what Ann Arbor Public Schools look like and we need participants. I plan to serve the Ann Arbor Public School community by focusing on the job of the Board of Education. I will work hard to build trust and effective working relationships between myself and my fellow board members. I will work with members of our local, state and federal government as well as Educational/School Board leaders to ensure that I am a knowledgeable Trustee.I've walked with Debbie Dingell in the Ann Arbor Jaycee's Parade for a couple of years, I'm unsure if they were only election years. I participated in the "March for our Lives" protest in March of 2018. I have participated with Give 365 in cleaning up our local parks!I have mentored others personally and professionally : Personally, as a Girl Scout Leader since 2019 and most recently working with young people on the Set Teams for Haisley Players and with YPT in Ann Arbor . Professionally in the Toy Industry, I've been a "Young Inventor's Challenge" mentor for the last 10 years and I've mentored new hires who became colleagues in my corporate life. Whether working with young people or adults, it's about being respectful and listening while sharing your own experience so that you reach a successful outcome. It would mean a lot to have an endorsement of my political peers within Washtenaw County. The endorsement from WCDP carries a lot of weight with voters within the Ann Arbor Public Schools voting area.I have been an active PTO Member in AAPS since Fall 2017, working as Haisley Elementary's PTO Council Rep and Enrichment Chair in alternating terms until Spring 2024. Within that group I have organized community and student events as well as served as a Co-Producer of the Haisley Players since Fall 2022. I have been a Girl Scout Leader since 2019 and appreciate all of the kids, families and co-leaders that I've gotten to know through my experiences. Learning new skills and volunteering time with organization Give 365 and Food Gatherers along with our Scout troops has been a very fulfilling use of my time! Most recently I had the opportunity to work with Young People's Theater (YPT) in Ann Arbor on their Set Team. I interact with my neighbors regularly in our bi-weekly back yard gatherings or our Dinners in the Park! I try to ensure that our neighbors on Next Door and facebook are aware of happenings in the City and at our Schools.I have been able to door-to-door canvass for Elizabeth Warren in early 2020 and took my eldest daughter to see her speak at Eastern Market in Detroit right before the Senator stopped her Presidential Campaign. I am already signed up to start door-to-door canvassing for Vice President Harris and support her campaign for President! To my knowledge, I have never been accused or convicted of any wrongdoing nor character related issues that would cast a shadow over my office or the WCDP.More Candidate Info ↗️
Ernesto QuerijeroAnn Arbor School Board - TrusteeI’m the best candidate for 2 reasons: first is experience. I’ve taken MASB courses on labor relations, FERPA laws, superintendent evaluation, and community engagement. I helped our community through COVID-19 and have institutional knowledge of AAPS. I have built and strengthened relationships with legislators to advocate for programming and funding initiatives, like free school meals, literacy initiatives, and changes in state requirements. Experience ensures that the BOE is doing the most it can for AAPS students. Second, I am the most experienced in the field of Education. I graduated from U of M with a B.A. in English and a M.S. Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania. I taught 8 years in the Michigan K-12 system and am currently a full-time faculty at WCC teaching students how to read and write for academic success. Many are current AAPS students, graduates, and parents. I engage with these community stakeholders to affect positive change to help all the AAPS community. As a Trustee, I consistently advocate for transparency. This includes clarifying Trustees’ role and making Board work visible by inquiring about school expenses, mental health & special education services, and decisions about curriculum & programming. I update & listen to the public in virtual office hours, which allows civic engagement about Board policies, before & after care, and transportation safety. This benefits constituents by making the role more accessible.I have used the office to benefit constituents in the APISA/A community. Asian residents make up 16% of Ann Arbor, and Asian students make up 13% of AAPS students; however, AAPS employees who identify as Asian make up less than 4% of teachers, and of the AAPS school principals, building leaders, and central leaders, none identify as Asian. Having a multicultural educational community is important for student learning, and representing and uplifting voices of the APISA/A community is inherent in my role.As a member of the WCDP, I have regularly attended meetings and am connected with county-wide and state-wide issues, but my favorite work and involvement with the WCDP is in regard to literacy. With other community leaders, I served as a panelist for the WCDP-hosted forum on the literacy crisis in Washtenaw County to share perspectives on after-school and in-school support programming. Through my connections and relationships within the WCDP and my grassroots literacy group Book For Kids, I was a core organizer of the Family Literacy Initiative Campaign Kickoff at WCC hosted by the Literacy Coalition of Washtenaw. I attend community-wide events throughout the County to connect and listen to voters and other education advocates. Relationships that I have built within the WCDP have helped raise community-wide awareness about our literacy crisis to bring about real change. As a full-time, active teacher, a significant part of my daily work is mentoring young people (16+) on how to navigate the adjustment to college and take personal responsibility for one’s actions. Students often enter post-secondary education with little to no knowledge about navigating the post-secondary educational landscape Often, they’re unaware about registration protocols, computer literacy, applying for financial aid & scholarships, seeking counseling services, qualifying for learning support services, etc. This mentorship happens daily. Beyond that, I’ve mentored faculty colleagues through professional development, including holding seminars on pedagogical theory, specifically Backwards Design and UDL (Universal Design for Learning) course design. These are just some examples.I am seeking the endorsement of the WCDP because having the support of local Democrats gives stakeholders a voice at the table. Education is a core value of the Democratic Party. Although this is a non-partisan race, my values are aligned with the values of WCDP, in particular in regards to representation, inclusion, and environmental sustainability. Change comes from the bottom up and local politics matter. With an endorsement from the WCDP, I can better advocate for representation and inclusion for those in Washtenaw County who have the least. Please support me so I can continue my service on the Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education.I engage with the community as a faculty member at Washtenaw Community College. I teach over 100 students weekly and more in the Writing Center as a tutor. I am a core organizer in the APISA/A Advisory group. Over three years, we’ve hosted virtual author visits with nine award-winning AAPI authors. These visits have reached thousands of AAPS students. On the AAPS Sustainability Advisory Committee, I have met with leading climate advocates to help develop sound policy for AAPS. Working with the PTOC, I’ve listened and uplifted the needs of the District’s 11 Title I schools. Through my nonprofit Books for Kids, I have donated thousands of books to families in Washtenaw County through free book fairs in schools and meeting families where they are at community events. As an organizer with the Literacy Coalition of Washtenaw County, I’ve been able to spread awareness about Washtenaw County’s literacy crisis.I support Democratic causes of universal healthcare, college for all, clean water, energy democracy, literacy, a woman’s right to choose, and reproductive freedom with access to gender-affirming care. I stand in solidarity with unions. I’ve picketed with GEO at U of M, with teachers at EMU, and with APWU to support USPS. I collaborate with the Ann Arbor Sunrise Movement for climate justice. For 3 years, I’ve attended school funding advocacy days in Lansing hosted by the Michigan Education Justice Coalition and the Student Advocacy Center to inform legislators about real needs in our schools. I successfully advocated for free meals in public schools and free community college because of their impact on literacy and lifelong learning. I have collaborated with Dr. Pamela Pugh, Pres. of the Michigan State BOE and State Rep. Jimmie Wilson Jr. in their advocacy for public education. I support Comm. Rabhi for his work with unions and for speaking out against for-profit corporate utilities.NoneMore Candidate Info ↗️
Eric SturgisAnn Arbor School Board - TrusteeI am an AAPS grad Northside, Clague and Huron. I have been a coach in the AAPS and also did some volunteer tutoring. Students, and teacher are my passion and we have to support our current Superintendent Jazz Parks in these times of turmoil. We also have to have a forward looking approach to equity and student success and look to see how we can gain back the trust of the public as well as increase enrollment in AAPS. I dont have any axes to grind and do not come in with a hidden agenda, and have been through and seen first hand how the AAPS works and believe that makes me the best candidate.I plan on being a candidate that listens to all, and brings an open mind to the table. Focusing on what is best for student achievement and how we can support our AAPS Teachers.I have volunteered on off year election campaigns as well. I have been a member of the MDP and WCDP since I was 18 years old.I mentor people through coaching and teaching. I believe that students learn the best when given opportunities to be successful and in leadership roles. When coaching I have always allowed my captains to speak for the team and give constant feedback. I believe this makes for the most effective leadership and mentoring. As a lifelong democrat and someone who has supported the MDP and WCDP for many years I believe that there endorsement is warranted. I have been a Precinct Delegate where I reached out to voters, distributed voter guides and made sure people voted. I also follow the democratic principles and am proud to support Kamala Harris for President and Elissa Slotkin for Senate. I have also volunteered on many local campaigns, and admire the work of our great Congresswomen Debbie Dingell.I coach and communicate with Students all the time in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. I also volunteer on local and statewide campaigns, and have helped tutor and mentor middle school students in Ann Arbor. I also volunteer and help young men and women from Zimbabwe in securing a visa and going through the college process with them. There are so many to list but to start: Anne Bannister for Mayor, Angeline Smith for City Council, Pam Byrnes for State Rep, Debbie Dingell for Congress. I lead the Risk Advisory Services Practice at Rehmann, a national CPA and advisory firm, and help organizations understand their financial/operational/IT processes to identify and mitigate risks. I'm a proudly enrolled citizen of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, and have a personal commitment to programs for under-represented minorities, and I will be an advocate for programing that enables all children to be engaged and succeed.I will serve by being an informed, actively engaged Board member, focused on Students and Teachers who have a direct impact on the educational outcome of our community. I will leverage my education and experience to be an effective leader, helping to navigate a challenging financial environment, while leading through a growth mindset and efficiently communicating with all stakeholders. I've continued to be a well-informed voter and advocate for the growth and success of our community from a personal and professional standpoint.Mentoring is near and dear to my heart. As a parent volunteer in the classroom, I chose to work with the most vulnerable students, assisting with programming that helped them catch up in math or reading. I always take these as opportunities to mentor young students and be a good role model. I've lead mentoring and career preview programs directly supporting internships and engagement for underrepresented minorities. These have been opportunities to help young professionals grow, develop, and understand areas they want to pursue with someone supporting them along the way. I coach and mentor on a daily basis in my professional role, helping to build our team, find opportunities for each person's growth, and helping them navigate their careers. My proudest moments are seeing someone achieve new heights. I'm proud to say I've had a number of team members follow me to a new company to continue to be a part of my team.I'm seeking endorsement of the WCDP as we share Democratic values and support strong education in our community. My background and experience position me as an effective leader for the Ann Arbor Public Schools' Board of Education, and I need the WCDP's support in advocating for strong leaders to navigate the challenges that our district faces. Running for the Board of Education, especially in a non-partisan election that is at the end of the ballot in a Presidential election year, is extremely challenging in a district the size of Ann Arbor Public Schools. I need your support to get my message out to the community and continue to build on the commitment I've made to education over the years in advocating and supporting our students!I’ve worked consistently to support education in our community as an avid volunteer in the classroom and holding numerous positions in school and district-wide PTOs. Leslie WilkinsAnn Arbor School Board - TrusteeI am a qualified, calm, compassionate, thoughtful long-time AAPS parent. Volunteer and work experiences have made me very comfortable within the boardroom environment, and I’ve had lots of success working as part of a team. I ask hard questions and work collaboratively to make well-informed decisions.I was involved with my kids’ school PTOs for 7 years, 3 of them as Vice President of the middle school PTO board and I’m proud of the work I accomplished there, advocating for students and teachers. And I have no political aspirations beyond getting elected to serve on the school board. As a single mom with a full-time job outside the home, I’ve experienced firsthand the frustration of not having the time or resources that other families have to be the “squeaky wheel” to get their students’ needs met. I want to make sure that ALL students, ALL families, and ALL communities are considered and consulted when policy decisions are made.My constituents will be the AAPS students, families, and educators. I will work with the board to regain trust in our Board of Education and its processes, and make that a priority. I will work with the board to make our district attractive to top-notch educators and also find a way to keep the amazing teachers and staff members we currently have. And I will work with the board to meet the community’s expectation for educational excellence.Again, I plan to make sure that ALL students, ALL families, and ALL communities are considered and consulted when important policy decisions are made.Since the 2022 election cycle I’ve maintained my membership with the WCDP and attended a handful of meetings. I believe my work with the Ann Arbor PTOC, as well as serving on the board of the Ann Arbor Civic Theatre, have benefitted Washtenaw County constituents.I consider raising two thoughtful, socially responsible, happy teenagers to be my biggest mentoring success. In the 16 years at my sales and marketing job, I’ve also had the opportunity to mentor a number of fellow employees. I often work with them to improve their corporate and interpersonal communications. I especially enjoy helping young women as they navigate time management and work-life balance issues. An endorsement from the WCDP will make winning the election a lot easier. I personally have always started with the WCDP voters guide when deciding who to vote for, especially for non-partisan positions, and I know that’s the case for many, many voters. The WCDP endorsement is very important to me, not just because I know it will get me votes, but because I want to be seen and known as a proud Democrat. While the school board is a non-partisan position, I want it to be clear that I will use the values of the Democratic Party to inform my service on the board. In addition to working with school PTOs, I donate my time and my marketing skills to other nonprofit groups and community performing arts organizations. I’ve participated in many marches and protests, mostly in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. I regularly volunteer with a nonprofit organization that helps community members who are transitioning out of homelessness (Houseen2home.org). And I regularly donate blood through the American Red Cross.I canvassed locally for both Obama elections and for the Hillary campaign. For the 2020 election, when canvassing wasn’t COVID-friendly, I made a lot of phone calls, specifically within Georgia, which helped flip the state blue to elect Biden. I’ve also worked with the NAACP’s efforts to get out the Black vote. Since 2020 I’ve participated in postcard parties, and I spent time a few weeks ago canvassing for Trish Reilly and her slate for Pittsfield Township.I have not.More Candidate Info ↗️

I am grateful to call it home, and look forward to serving my community in the future. Mentorship is a major part of my career. When I worked at Eastern Michigan University Counseling and Psychological Services, I was the director of post-graduate studies. I helped plan and run our post-doctoral and post-master's training programs. I've also supervised and mentored graduate students, post-docs, and new graduates since becoming fully licensed in 2014. I donate regularly to women's health charities, and our family has sponsored two children for over 10 years through a charity. Professionally, I am committed to mental health advocacy, providing free suicide prevention training, and participating in community events like Out of the Darkness Walks. I also volunteer on the reproductive health committee for the Chelsea district and am dedicated to ensuring a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students. My hands-on involvement and dedication reflect my commitment to enhancing our community’s well-being.I have voted for Democratic candidates in every election since turning 18 years old. I identified as an independent until sometime during the first presidency of George W. Bush. I grew up in a conservative family, and it had never occurred to me that I could be a Democrat. The more I read, and the more that I saw in the world, the more I came to align with the party. During graduate school, I attended my first political rally, and slowly became more involved over time. HEIDI REYSTChelsea School Board - TrusteeI am a product of public education, and I believe strongly in the value that it brings. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Kalamazoo College (June 1991) and a PhD in Applied Social Psychology from George Washington University (August 2001). Education is near and dear and is why this is an important endeavor. Education in every form is critical, be it a trade school, college, or other paths. Advocacy as it pertains to the Board of Education entails being a champion of the district’s causes, engaging with the community and fostering relationships to get the important work done. Being a good advocate also means ensuring accountability to students, staff, and the larger community. I have decades of leadership as an executive, a small business owner, and significant experience as a board member and board chair.Research shows that school boards working alongside strong superintendents positively impact student achievement, and I wish to be a part of that success.I’ve not previously run for School Board. However, a seat was vacated this January. I applied for the seat and was appointed to a term ending in November 2024. In the 6 intervening months, I have learned a profound amount of knowledge regarding the following: how school boards operate and how school board members interface with administration, teachers, staff and students. School board members have a responsibility to educate themselves about the role, and school-related activities. That education process is in full swing, inclusive of requisite training for superintendent evaluation which is critical aspect of being a board member. There are many areas where I have gained knowledge as it pertains to this role include the following: school budget, policy, strategic planning, curriculum, personnel, operations and facility management. I’ve had the distinct honor of meeting remarkable teachers and staff, and seeing up close the significant effort it takes to provide quality education. As it pertains to this question I am new to "formal" politics. That being said, I am a lifelong Democrat, and avid voter. While not formally involved in WCDP politics, I am very much in tune with politics. I am a member of Chelsea Equality, which is affiliated with Michigan Equality, and am passionate about LGBTQ+ issues. I am horrified by the ever-evolving anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and am sicked by the level of vitriol the far right has espoused. I am steadfast in my mission to live authentically. As an out queer woman, wife, and mother, I am determined to be a positive role model for queer youth. Being an out school board member shows students (or anyone for that matter) aren't tied to limits others may put on them.I have been in leadership roles for more then 3 decades. I've lead numerous teams and dozens of clinicians and employees. An area I feel I positively impacted was modeling how to be leader. I listened. I worked hard. I worked alongside them when navigating complicated client situations. I provided recognition. I provided constructive feedback, even if it wasn't what they wanted to hear at the time, but always with an eye toward learning from the experience. I was always available, and they knew I would respond day or night. In my first career in brain injury rehabilitation, professional growth was not only important, it was also my mission. I developed educational programs alongside clinicians to ensure we had the best skilled teams. Those collaborations were some of my most cherished experiences as a supervisor, mentor and leader.I'm seeking endorsement so that voters in my district understand my values, my experience, and the skills I bring to the School Board position I am seeking to keep.As a political novice of sorts, I have come to very much appreciate the opportunity to give back to my community. Being a member of the school board is extremely rewarding. As a result of the appointment to the school board I have established many new relationships, both political an non-political. This has increased my community engagement in meaningful ways.I have voted as a democrat in every election since 1992, and nearly every primary since that time as well. No, I have not.More Candidate Info ↗️
Sara TracyChelsea School Board - TrusteeAs a product of this district from over 30 years ago as well as a parent of three young children in the district currently, I feel that I have a unique perspective on the current issues and challenges in this district. I see what is currently being taught in the schools as well as how that impacts our children daily. Additionally, I have worked in the healthcare industry for nearly 30 years, and I believe that I have an excellent grasp on how our public schools can help shape and guide the path a person chooses for their career. As a trustee of the board of education, I intend to listen to the concerns of our district parents as well as those who do not have children in the district to understand what is working in the school system as well as where there is room for improvement. I will use this feedback to guide my work on the school board.I have not been involved in the WCDP in non election years. As a leader in the healthcare space for over two decades, I have been able to mentor my employees on numerous occasions. Specifically, I have mentored a number of front line employees into leadership positions of their own and advancing their careers. In the past, I mentored a front line nurse into a front line supervisor position and then into a manager position, helping her elevate her career. I am seeking the endorsement of the WCDP to further share my candidacy with the area for the upcoming election. I stay closely involved in our local students swim club as a volunteer and have donated materials to the club to support scholarships for low income swimmers. In our previous district school board election (2022) I personally supported three of the four candidate by donating customized promotional material to their campaigns and working closely with them to promote their candidacies. Additionally, I volunteered on the 2020 election as a phone volunteer. N/AMore Candidate Info ↗️
Carrie Karvonen-GutierrezMilan School Board - TrusteeI am an excellent candidate because I am experienced and educated, committed, and diplomatic. I have served on the Milan Area Schools BOE since April 2023 when I was appointed to fill a vacancy. Since then, I have participated regularly in trainings needed to be an effective trustee, worked closely with our superintendent and fellow trustees to understand the strengths and challenges of our district, and welcomed feedback and comments from the many stakeholders in our community. Beyond this experience, I am highly experienced with public education and am a lifelong learner. I completed my high school diploma, Bachelors, Masters, and doctoral degree at public institutions and continue to participate in the educational process as both a teacher and student. As a current and future MAS trustee, I am committed to serving in a diplomatic fashion through active listening and informed conversations to ensure that all viewpoints are considered when making decisions affecting our district.I strive to hear all viewpoints from the many stakeholders in our district and to consider these perspectives when learning about issues. I use my role as a school board trustee to advocate for needed priorities in our District and to inform my decisions on key issues. One thing that I have regularly heard from stakeholders (teachers, parents) is the importance of well-trained special education staff and the desire of those staff (paraprofessionals and others) to receive regular and relevant training. After hearing from paraprofessionals and parents about the value of a 'Paraprofessional Bootcamp Training' at the ISD, I continue to advocate for ongoing professional development for this staff group that is tailored to the needs of this profession. I undertake this advocacy through regular conversations with district administrators, and in my comments at board meetings. I am passionate about continued conversations with community stakeholders to inform key priorities to address.Since I first moved to Washtenaw County over 20 years ago, I have aligned myself with the Democratic Party through various activities. This includes participating in conversations to discuss and advocate for key issues affecting our community, volunteering for civic organizations that promote community engagement, and collaborating with local organizations to address social and economic challenges in Washtenaw County, including my long-standing support of Aid in Milan, a human service agency serving members of the Milan community.Mentorship is a key part of who I am in both my professional and personal identities. As a Professor at the University of Michigan, I teach nearly 300 students each year, and directly mentor dozens of undergraduate and graduate students and junior faculty members. I currently serve as the Associate Chair for Faculty Affairs in my department, am the primary mentor for five doctoral students and supervise 5-10 undergraduate student employees in my research group. In my personal life, I mentor young people through my role as a Girl Scouts Troop Leader; I have worked with the same group of girls for the past five years. During that time, I've enjoyed hiking, camping, volunteering, cooking, crafting, and learning with the girls. The WCDP aligns with my values and priorities. An endorsement from the WCDP will be a statement to voters about who I am, what I stand for, and what I value in our communities. For the past 10 years, I have been actively involved in my children’s schools through leadership positions with the PTO and have served on the District-wide Sex Education Advisory Board (SEAB). I am currently a Trustee on the Board of Education. In addition to this, I participate actively in my community. For several years, I volunteered at Aid in Milan and, co-Chaired the first Empty Bowls event, which is now the flagship annual fundraiser for the organization. For the past five years, I have volunteered as a Girl Scouts leader for Troop 40625 including nine scouts. I also serve serve on the City of Milan Parks and Recreation Commission.Since I became of voting age, I have supported (financially, in-kind) and voted for Democratic candidates and causes, locally, state-wide, and nationally.NoMore Candidate Info ↗️
Cassie PriorMilan School Board - TrusteeI am the best candidate for this position because I am dedicated to our community and helping our families thrive. I recognize that a stable community is inextricably linked with a thriving school system and that this symbiotic relationship needs to be strong. I have had two children successfully graduate through our school system but know there are areas that need focus to make them work for all our students. No longer having children in the school system will help me maintain objectivity when considering policy and changes in practice. I am energetic and will put in the effort and time needed to be successful as a board member. I was appointed to the board in December of 2023 and in the last eight months I have worked to benefit our school community by supporting the continued achievement of our students through my full participation in meetings, trainings, and school events. Being a board member is not just a two-meeting-a-month commitment. It requires long hours of reading and learning policy, completing training and countless hours at school events. I have worked hard to acquire as much knowledge as possible in this short time so I can be effective in my role. I use this office to directly benefit the school community by thoughtfully and conscientiously working through decisions to come to the conclusion that best benefits our school community now and in the long term. I have been a lifelong Democrat but never a formal member of the democratic party. Throughout the years and not just during election time, I have provided advocacy and support to initiatives central to the Democratic Party. In addition to providing financial support for these causes, I have volunteered at phone banks and attended events to advocate for responsible gun control, civil rights, and a woman’s right to choose.During my career in child welfare, as a worker and a supervisor, I have mentored individuals in formal roles at the beginning of their journey as well as those later in their career who are trying to advance to the next level. During my time as a child welfare supervisor, I participated in a leadership mentoring program for Wayne County workers who were building their leadership skills and experience to be promoted. I met with the students monthly to provide coaching, assist with communication and interview skills, and discuss opportunities for advancement. I have also acted as a mentor informally throughout my career by providing support as an experienced colleague and friend.I am seeking this endorsement because the Democratic Party’s values align with my belief system of how humans should be treated and cared for by fellow citizens and those in power. I believe this endorsement will help clearly define my ideology to the community. I recognize that the office I seek is non-partisan and I intend to make decisions in that spirit but see it is important to acknowledge from which belief system that approach will start. In addition to being a current trustee on the Milan School Board where I participate in school activities, sporting events, and fundraisers, I am also a board member for the Greater Milan Area Community Foundation. This foundation works to promote the success of nonprofit organizations who service our community. The GMACF provides financial assistance to these organizations so they can fulfill their mission. I also attend meetings for community non-profits such as Moving Milan Forward, A.R.C., as well as events hosted by the City of Milan so I can stay engaged in my town. I also attempt to volunteer my time to community events monthly.I am a strong supporter of social justice issues in general, but my largest support has gone to LGBTQ+ and pro-choice initiatives. I was a previous volunteer for Equality Michigan and Planned Parenthood. I have supported democratic candidates by attending their fundraisers, through financial donations, and displaying their campaign material. For our future, I have tried to raise socially aware children who will care for their communities as well. I have notMore Candidate Info ↗️
Darcy BerwickSaline School Board - TrusteeFor the last 16 years I have worked in the schools with students, teachers, staff, and admin: on our PTA/PTO boards at every level, always as a parent volunteer both inside and outside of the classrooms, and now as a substitute teacher and para pro.I have worked hard to forge relationships with educators, families, and the School Board, always putting students first. I have regularly attended Board meetings for several years now and am informed on current issues in the district. I also work to stay abreast of potential issues that may arise in the future.I am running for School Board for the first time and, in addition to the experience I bring to the table, I will work to establish better relationships with families of all students as well as the community at large. As a Precinct Delegate since 2020, I primarily volunteer to lit drop, including the voter guides. These past few years I have successfully ushered a dozen candidates to seats on their districts' Board of Education and I assisted on three city council races (two successfully) throughout the election process. My experience with, and understanding of, campaign management allowed candidates to focus their time and efforts on connecting with their constituents.Shared values, particularly with regards to providing a quality public education and preserving our American democracy.I was recently on the Board of Directors for a local non-profit working to support marginalized communities locally (Saline Supports Our Community) and I currently serve on the Board of a newer non-profit meant to foster STEM teams in the Saline Area School District (Saline STEM Boosters).I have in the past, and will again this fall, deliver voter guides and assist with lit drops when possible.N/AMore Candidate Info ↗️
Susan EstepSaline School Board - TrusteeI was elected to the Saline Area Schools Board of Education in 2018, and I am running for re-election. I have three children in the district. With my oldest in high school and my youngest in Kindergarten, I'm committed to Saline Area Schools and our community. With a career in student affairs and as a Board Trustee, I’ve been a fierce advocate for public education. As a school board member, I have taken the opportunity to increase my advocacy skills in education by engaging in professional development, serving on committees, and presenting on the importance of student voice in policy making. This is important to me as a life-long learner, and allows me to not only serve our students, staff and community on a local level, but to also advocate for education in the State of Michigan and the Nation. If re-elected, I will continue to advocate for a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where all students and staff can thrive. As someone who was elected to public office, it is important for me to represent my constituents. I highly value input from families, students, staff and community members. As the first LGBTQ+ Board Trustee to be elected to Saline Area Schools, I use my voice to advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. As Policy Chair, I introduced and drafted two significant policies; The Transgender and Nonbinary Students Policy, and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Committee Policy. When drafting the Transgender and Nonbinary Students Policy, it was important to involve parents of transgender and nonbinary children, and to have input from LGBTQ+ students. The Board’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Committee has been part of significant change made in the district. I truly believe that the voices of people who have been marginalized should be represented at all stages of decision-making. I’m running for re-election to continue to use my voice for those who are marginalized.I recently attended the Annual WCDP Garden Party. This was a great opportunity to not only network with other elected officials and candidates, but to get to know many dedicated members of the Democratic Party who put their support behind candidates to represent us.I’ve had opportunities to attend rallies, special events, volunteer, and to endorse candidates. Additionally, I’ve been honored to speak at Ann Arbor Pride and the Pride Flag Raising in the City of Saline. My career in student affairs, I’ve advised and mentored many college students who were at-risk. This included supporting students who are the first generation, foster youth, parents with young children, LGBTQ+, students of color, and students returning after a significant break. As a Board Trustee, I’ve been a mentor to others by providing knowledge on policy making. I’ve provided leadership locally and state-wide to Board members, through my role as Policy Chair for three years, and my three-year term on the Michigan Association of School Boards’ Resolutions and Bylaws Committee. An example of mentoring was partnering with our newest Board Trustee to draft a Gun Safety Resolution that the Board passed. In 2018, I was endorsed by the Washtenaw County Democratic Party. To my knowledge, I was the first Saline Area Schools Board Candidate to receive the endorsement. While the position is Nonpartisan, my motivation for seeking out the endorsement then and now is that I'm committed to the Democratic Party and hold their values. As a current Board Trustee for Saline Area Schools, and as a parent of three, I’m actively involved in volunteering and serving the district. I volunteer in the classrooms, read with students, support school events, and am a Celebrity Mystery Reader. This year, I volunteered for Junior Achievement. This program teaches students about entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and workforce readiness. My involvement with the Democratic Party goes back to 2006 in Virginia. A Virginia Marriage Amendment was on the ballot to prevent gay marriage. I got involved and educated voters about the harmful impact of the amendment. Unfortunately, it passed, but it ignited my passion to get involved with the Democratic Party to make real change. I supported Tim Kaine’s election for Governor in 2006, and I volunteered with the Obama Campaign in 2008. After moving to Michigan, I continued the fight for social justice. As an elected official who is involved in the community, democratic candidates have requested for my endorsement, and I’ve offered to endorse. I’ve proudly endorsed candidates for State Representative, County Commissioner, Judge, City Council, Mayor, and more. Most recently, I’ve supported Lodi Township candidates for Supervisor, Clerk, and Trustee. I’m so excited to finally have Democratic candidates on the ballot for Lodi Township!NoMore Candidate Info ↗️
Brad GerbeSaline School Board - TrusteeFor four years I have fought for and cared for the values I mentioned in the previous paragraph. As the grandson of a UAW leader, and someone I am proudly named after, William Gerbe, I believe strongly in affirming individuals who are committed to building up the next generation. Your endorsement is important to me as I wish to affirm my grandfather and the life I have to be named after him and carry his UAW Spartan ring.I am also the best candidate because I want to continue to do this work and I think (hope) I have faithfully served the community of Saline.I have been an advocate every day for strong public schools taught by teachers and supported by individuals who are compensated as professionals. As the finance chair and Treasurer it has been important to me to establish fair contracts, while also maintaining fiscal responsibility.I was also a strong supporter of policies that affirm inclusivity including the transgender policy that Saline was a leader in passing.I have used my voice at the table to make sure that curriculum is inclusive of all learners including adopting health curriculum that worked to support at risk pupils populations. We passed a significant bond. As such, we have work to do and I want to continue to support and drive, especially in the financial end, bond initiatives that will make Saline a leader in student supports. Exciting things like state of the art STEM (STEAM) facilities.I have engaged with many elected officials such as Shannon Beeman. During elections 2 years ago I canvassed for WCDP individuals.I am the bargaining chair for the Manchester teachers (I teach Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy & Forensics) union where I’ve fought for wages and benefits for Washtenaw county Indians, students and residents.I am a mentor and leader in a number of ways.Obviously, as a teacher.Further, I’ve mentored others as they’ve joined our Saline Board team. Individuals like Dr. Lauren Gold who is an incredible advocate for students and families, but didn’t have some of the knowledge that I possess about school finance as a bargaining chair and/ or finance chair/ Treasurer. Engaging in that professional development has been awesome annoyance greatly enjoyed it. Lauren is incredible.I believe I also have been a mentor as part of our Board team. I engage in a lot of phone calls and conversations where I learn from my teammates and also offer perspective where my strengths lie.I am seeking the endorsement because I align with the values of the Democratic Party. While I am a Trustee for all, and I do believe it is important for me to listen to and learn from the perspective of those who think differently from me (these individuals have kids in our schools), when I evaluate my own personal belief system- I am a Democrat. As such, I’m hoping you’ll help me continue to serve Saline students and families through your endorsement. As an elected individual I often engage with others. Even those who see the world differently from myself. These conversations happen in a lot of areas and places.I am also engaged with many constituents through emails and phone calls.I’ve been supporting Democratic candidates my whole adult life. And before. My dad was a public school teacher. I am a proud public school teacher. I vote accordingly. Democratic candidates believe in fair working conditions, wages and benefits- as such I need them to be in places of influence.I’m my “elected era” as I’ve stated previously I’ve helped other Democrats become elected through canvassing, attending conventions (MEA bargaining), and in my conversations with other potential voters.NeverMore Candidate Info ↗️
Dawn EspyYpsilanti School Board - Trustee I am the best candidate for YSC school board, because I have been investing in this community for nearly 15 years. I have been a researcher, a caregiver, a service provider, a consultant and a resident of this community. I have worked and connected with people in nearly every system that touches young people in our community. I have worked with administrators as well as educators to understand their needs and support their social justice education. Previously I worked for youth-centered nonprofits, and now I provide consultation to support local organizations strategic approach, board development and organizational culture. I have worked at the policy level and I have also been a direct-care worker. My range of experiences and my passion for amplifying youth voice has prepared me well to serve as a member of the YCS school board. As a first time candidate, I see my role as one that requires listening and learning. I want to create space for parents, students and educators to be heard and listened to. My job as an elected trustee is to bring our community's needs to the forefront. I will bring a critical lens to the decision-making spaces and ask the question of who is missing? and whose needs are being prioritized? My goal is to be accessible to the community and intentional in my work. I make sure to vote in local elections as well as national. Over the years I have supported the mental health millage, both in voting and in the implementation of dollars. I have participated in learning opportunities like Champions for Change at the non-profit NEW. This space deepened my connection with other progressive change makers across the county. I have advocated for affordable housing, attending hearing held by the CBO at City Hall and showing up to events to learn about the new Catherine St. housing in Ann Arbor. I also attend many local events, like Parkridge festival, Juneteenth celebrations, pride, Noise Permit and Top of the Park. Washtenaw County is my home and I am grateful for all the ways in which our county serves its people. Over the years I have spent a great deal of time working with young people. I previously worked at Ozone House where I led the youth action group Speak Out. These young people shared their own stories and developed skits to inform the public around issues like youth homelessness. The group performed at the Michigan Coalition to End Homeless conference, and lobbied for legislation to support young people in our community. This work led me to working and then volunteering to support a youth poetry and advocacy group called Staying Power. My role was that of a mentor, a friend, a service provider and advocate. I still maintain relationships with a number of youth that I have worked with over the years and always remain a resource and supporter to them. I am seeking the endorsement of WCDP because the party aligns with my vision and values. In recent elections I have voted for WCDP endorsed candidates, not just because they were Democrats, but because of their stance on local issues, and the confidence I feel in those folks who are part of a larger community. Change occurs, not solely because you believe in it, but as a result of collective action. An elected official needs to have people in their corner, others who see the world as they do and are invested in the same vision. I believe that being a candidate endorsed by WCDP I will be part of the great history and community of folks who take action and create change. I am active in community spaces. I support local artisans, attend events at the schools and show up in support of community leaders. I contribute to local businesses and support initiatives like the A2Zero initiative. I have donated my time and financial resources to youth performers like Staying Power and volunteered with the PTO at my child's school. I will continue to share information about and attend local community events and fundraisers.I have been an active supporter of Democratic candidates for most of my adult life. I have primarily participated in national election canvassing. I went to rallies for Barack Obama and participated in phone banking for his and Hillary's campaigns. Additionally my voting record is in support of the Democratic party, at every level. I am also an advocate for education reform, universal pre-school, housing first legislation and decarceration efforts. I have not experienced any accusations of wrongdoing in our community or any other. The extent of my wrongdoing is traffic tickets or parking violations. More Candidate Info ↗️
