The Anishinaabek Caucus of the MI Democratic Party has had a very full year, gaining membership and working on a range of issues affecting the Tribes of Michigan. A major push is to prevent the opening of a wolf hunt– despite the statewide vote rejecting a hunt, the legislature has given the authority to the Senate Natural Resources Committee (bypassing the DNR) and they are pushing for a trophy hunting nand trapping season. You can sign a petition here!

Another key issue is a bill recognizing wild rice (manoomin) as the state grain, which would be instrumental in helping this wonderful plant re-establish itself in MI waterways. For a full picture of all the Caucus has been doing, visit their website at

The Caucus is excited to share that Brian Newland of the Bay Mills Indian Community has been nominated as Assistant secretary of Indian Affairs at the Department of the Interior. Having real representation of Michigan’s tribes in this key post is a game changer!
