Since is it is a members only meeting\, and voting will occur\, pre-registration is required\, and will close on February 6\, 2024\, at 5 pm\, to enable membership verification. \nPurpose: Elect members and alternates to the state convention committees: Rules\, Resolutions\, and Credentials. Consider resolutions to be forwarded to the State Party. Resolutions will be forwarded to registrants when they become available to Washtenaw County Democratic Party (WCDP) leaders. \nPer MDP Rules\, all counties are required to hold County Conventions\, and ours will be held via Zoom. Since is it is a members only meeting\, and voting will occur\, registration is required. \nVoting Eligibility: Per MDP Rules\, to vote at the 2/8 county convention a person must be a member of the WCDP/MDP for at least thirty (30) days\, which is January 9\, 2025.  The WCDP received notice of this required county convention after the January 9 deadline for joining in order to vote in it. We apologize for understandable disappointment. People in some Democratic Party roles including Precinct Delegates\, Democratic elected officials\, and Democratic nominees to partisan offices residing in Washtenaw County can renew their membership the day of the convention.. \nThe purpose of this convention is to elect members and alternates to the three state convention committees –  Rules\, Resolutions\, and Credentials – and to consider resolutions to be forwarded by the MDP. \nMDP Committees\nThe three State Convention Committee responsibilities and meeting times are below. All meetings are via Zoom; invitations will be sent by MDP leadership after the Feb. 8 County Convention. To be considered as a candidate for any of the committees please submit this form by Friday\, February 7\, at 5:00 pm. Nominations will be taken from the floor\, but early nominations greatly simplify meeting management\, so we appreciate your planning ahead. \nCredentials\nMeeting Tuesday\, February 11\, 2025 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM \nMembers of the Convention’s Credentials Committee shall meet to discuss and receive training on the credentialing process for the State Convention. Members of the Credentials Committee are encouraged to help Democrats in their County and Congressional District become credentialed. The Committee’s chair shall be designated by the Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party.  \nMembers are invited to provide credentialing support at the State Convention on Saturday\, February 22\, 2025. Members of the Credentials Committee are asked to attend the Convention and assist with the credentialing process\, which requires a comfortability with technology. Additionally\, the Committee shall meet at the call of the Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party at the State Convention\, if necessary.  \nRules\nMeeting Tuesday\, February 11\, 2025 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM \nMembers of the Convention’s Rules Committee shall meet virtually to consider rules for the State Convention and to receive training in those rules and on proportional voting. The Committee’s chair shall be designated by the Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party.  \nThe Committee will approve the final version of the rules that will oversee all business at the State Convention. Members of the Rules Committee are not required to attend the State Convention.  \nResolutions\nMeeting Wednesday\, February 12\, 2025 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM and if necessary to complete the work reconvening Thursday\, February 13\, 2025 at 6:00 PM.  \nMembers of the Convention’s Resolutions Committee shall meet to consider resolutions approved at County and District Conventions and submitted for statewide consideration. The Committee’s chair shall be designated by the Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party.  \nThe Resolutions Committee will discuss\, edit\, and vote on a number of resolutions with the ultimate goal of creating a packet of resolutions that will go before the entire membership at the State Convention for a vote. Members of the Resolutions Committee are not required to attend the State Convention. \nWCDP Convention Agenda\n\nCall to Order\nApproval of the Agenda\nCredential Report (Membership Committee — how many members pre-registered to participate; how many have joined)\nRules Report (How this process will work: voting by raised hand\, nominations accepted from the floor)\nElection of Convention Committee Members & Alternates\nWCDP Allocations: The MDP makes space allocations to each committee by county\, based on vote totals for the top of the ticket in the most recent general election as a proportion of the congressional district vote. WCDP’s allocations are: \n\nCredentials: 1 woman-identified or nonbinary member; 1 man-identified or nonbinary alternate\nResolutions: 1 man-identified or nonbinary member; 1 man-identified or nonbinary alternate\nRules: 1 man-identified or nonbinary member; 1 woman-identified or nonbinary alternate\n\nIn general\, per MDP rules\, committee members shall have gender identity allocated in such a way so that the number of self-identified men and the number of self-identified women does not vary by more than one. Gender nonbinary members shall not be counted as either men or women\, but do count towards the total allocation of members.\nConsideration of Resolutions\nOne resolution has been put forth by a WCDP member for candidate transparency. Three resolutions have been forwarded to all county parties by Justin Mendoza\, Chair of Kalamazoo County Dems\, for consideration during our conventions. They include this resolution to revise gendered language in the MDP bylaws; this resolution to use a ballot measure to remove language restricting marriage to one man and one woman in the Michigan constitution; and this resolution in support of a living wage floor in Michigan. Justin requests that we vote to move these resolutions forward for consideration by the MDP Resolutions Committee. \nPlease review the resolutions in advance of the meeting. Discussion will be limited; we will take an up-or-down vote only\, without attempts to edit during the meeting. \nNote that resolutions issued by the WCDP standing alone follow a different process\, stipulated in Article 9 of WCDP bylaws.\nGood and Welfare\nAdjournment\n\nAs always\, send your WCDP questions to info@washtenawdems.org.

SUMMARY:[VIDEO UP] WCDP January Meeting: The Literacy Crisis in Washtenaw County caused by Poverty and the Pandemic: How we all can help
DESCRIPTION:Video up!  See below ⬇️  or watch on Youtube 📺 \nOf the 3\,000 third grade students in Washtenaw County whose English Language proficiency was tested in the 2022-23 school year\, half were found not to be proficient or only partially proficient. See https://www.mischooldata.org/grades-3-8-state-testing-includes-psat-data-proficiency/ But even this statistic fails to capture the magnitude of the challenge. Significant numbers of students are one\, two\, or even three years behind grade level in the elementary years. These figures are higher in the economically most under-resourced parts of the county and among African-American students\, students with disabilities\, and students who have experienced homelessness. \n\n\nThe inability to read adequately can cripple a person’s future possibilities\, and greatly increases the likelihood of many kinds of trauma and negative life outcomes. SUMMARY:[VIDEO UP] WCDP Monthly Meeting: Our Democratic State Legislature
DESCRIPTION:Video up!  See below ⬇️  or watch on Youtube 📺 \nFirst Democratic MI Legislature in 38 Years:\nAccomplishments So Far and Plans for the Future\nThe Michigan legislature\, with a narrow Democratic majority\, has already adopted legislation: repealing the 1931 Michigan law that banned abortions; preventing free-riding\, opting out of paying union dues\, in unionized workplaces; requiring contractors on state projects to pay union-level wages; fighting our terrible national and state problem of gun violence by requiring safe storage of firearms\, extending background checks to rifles and shotguns\, and allowing judges to confiscate guns from people who show clear warning signs of violence; and expanded protection against discrimination for LGBTQ+ residents of Michigan. \nAnd that is just the start. \nWashtenaw County state and local leaders are playing a leading role in tackling problems that have festered for many years. Many joined to discuss the accomplishments of the legislature to date and plans for the future\, including: \n\nSenator Jeff Irwin\,  Senate District 15\nRepresentative Jason Morgan\, House District 23\nSenator Sue Shink\, Senate District\nCommissioner Justin Hodge\, Chair\nCounty Commissioner Crystal Lyte\nCommissioner Caroline Sanders\nCommissioner Annie Somerville

SUMMARY:[VIDEO UP] WCDP Monthly Meeting: Community Violence Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Video up!  See below ⬇️  or watch on Youtube 📺 \nCommunity Violence Intervention:\nThe Washtenaw County Approach to Making Communities Safer and Saving Young Lives\nA mural of a black rose designed by Ypsilanti student DeShawn Chambers. Surrounding the flora are the names of 50 Washtenaw County citizens who have lost their lives to gun violence since 2008. The majority are Black boys and men under 22 years old. The mural is one of the many initiatives of the Ypsilanti Community Violence Intervention Team. \nMany of the gun deaths plaguing our communities are not the result of the horrific\, heart-breaking mass shootings that make headlines\, but are because of suicide\, domestic violence and gun violence in our cities driven by generational poverty\, disinvestment in communities and young lives\, structural racism and the hopelessness and despair they create. Gun violence has become the leading cause of death for children and teenagers in this country. The WCDP April 1st General Meeting Program will focus on Community Violence Intervention (CVI) and our approach in Washtenaw County to preventing gun violence in our cities and townships and saving young lives.  \nCVI can include hospital intervention after a young person has been shot or community-based intervention by CVI workers who interact with those likely to be involved with gun violence\, either as perpetrators or as victims\, in order to prevent gun violence from taking place. In Washtenaw County we are using a hybrid approach\, incorporating both the hospital and community-based approaches while including efforts to address the conditions that foster gun violence.  \nThe WCDP April 1st Program discussion was moderated by Washtenaw County Sheriff Jerry Clayton and included: \n\nDerrick Jackson\, Director of Community Engagement\, Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office\nBryan Foley\, CVI leader and Vice President of Supreme Felons\nRoger Roper\, from WeLive (a hospital-based intervention)\nJustin Hodge\, Chair\, Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners\nEli Savit\, Washtenaw County Prosecutor\n\nThese subject matter experts who are doing the work explained local CVI efforts\, why they are considered best practices and are supported nationally\, on a state level and locally. Information on a state-wide CVI Summit hosted locally on May 1st was provided for those who would like to learn more.

SUMMARY:[VIDEO UP] WCDP Virtual Monthly Meeting: Breaking Down Barriers
DESCRIPTION:Video up!  See below ⬇️  or watch on Youtube 📺 \nBreaking Down Barriers: The Importance of Firsts\, the Importance of Representation\n \nWe have four distinguished speakers on our panel for the WCDP Black History month program. They are speaking about the issues of Black “Firsts” and Black “Representation” as they relate to breaking down historical and persistent\, continuing barriers. We honor and respect the accomplishments of our panelists. We also honor and respect the past barrier-breaking efforts and achievements of our elders\, those who came before us. These include Black Ypsilanti mayors George Goodman\, John Burton\, and Lois Allen-Richardson; the first and only Black Ann Arbor mayor Albert Wheeler; the first Black Judge in Washtenaw County\, Nancy Francis\, and the other Black judges who have followed in her footsteps; the Black County Board of Commissioners\, including Christina Montague\, who was the first Black female Chair of the BoC\, and Conan Smith\, who was the first Black male BoC male Chair. For this panel today we also included “first electeds” as “firsts” because historically\, for Black women in particular\, the path to a position of decision-making has often had to be through the appointment process and the resultant incumbency which facilitated re-election. (Please note: Any errors or omissions in this list are inadvertent. We are all volunteers\, and appreciate your correcting the record for us through info@WashtenawDems.org.) \nThe distinguished panelists discussing Breaking Down Barriers: The Importance of Firsts\, the Importance of Representation are: \n\nSheriff Jerry L. Clayton Washtenaw County’s first and only African American Sheriff and the first and only of the 5 County-wide electeds\nArianne Slay\, the first Washtenaw County African American woman to be elected countywide (without having been appointed first) and the only current African American Circuit Court judge\nJustin Hodge\, the second African American male and current Chair of the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners\nNicole Brown\, the first elected (without having been appointed first) African American female and current Mayor of Ypsilanti City
