Moneyed interests have used race and racism as a tool in a class war we’re all losing – so says Professor Ian Haney López, renowned scholar of racism, and political messaging expert. Republicans and their rich allies have spent decades encouraging us to hate each other on the basis of race, while they laugh all the way to the bank.

How can we — as Democrats committed to a true, multi-racial democracy — fight the Republican tactic of weaponizing race? How can we understand and talk about race and class warfare in a way that will advance the common aspirations of most Americans with positive, permanent change?

Professor Haney López will address these questions as the featured guest on “Democracy Endgame?” on February 10th, 6:00 – 7:30 pm, via Zoom. The event is sponsored by the Washtenaw County Democratic Party, the Liberal Leadership League, and many Michigan-based allied groups.

“The strategy among powerful elites is to divide and conquer to protect their interests. The pragmatic way forward for all the rest of us is to unite and build, using our recognition of race as a class weapon as an organizing principle,” Haney López has said.

Haney López is a Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. In his 2013 book, Dog Whistle Politics, he detailed the fifty-year history of coded racism in American politics, work he advanced in his 2019 strategy manual Merge Left: Fusing Race and Class, Winning Elections, and Saving America. Haney López co-created the Race-Class Academy (https://race-class-academy.com/) and contributed the essay Can Democracy Survive? to the 2021-2022 series Democracy Endgame, The Grand Strategy against Authoritarianism in the U.S.
