Passed by the Washtenaw County Democratic Party Executive Committee on Tuesday, May 19, 2020.

WHEREAS since 2016 the Chinese government has “partly or completely demolished” numerous mosques and other Muslim religious sites in Xinjiang Province, as documented by satellite imagery (see “Revealed: new evidence of China’s mission to raze the mosques of Xinjiang” (May 6, 2019), The Guardian, accessed at;“UHRP REPORT: Demolishing Faith: The Destruction and Desecration of Uyghur Mosques and Shrines” (October 28, 2019), Uyghur Human Rights Project, accessed at;

WHEREAS the Chinese government has detained an estimated two million Uyghurs in Xinjiang Province in concentration camps and forced them to undergo systematic indoctrination in the Communist ideology as a way of destroying their religious faith and traditional culture, as documented in the Public Broadcasting Service documentary “China Undercover. A special undercover report from China’s secretive Xinjiang region,” broadcast on April 7, 2020 (see;

WHEREAS then United States Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan stated in September 2019 that the United States had received “credible reports of deaths, forced labor, torture, and other cruel, inhumane, or degrading treatment” in the Xinjiang concentration camps (see “U.S. leads condemnation of China for ‘horrific’ repression of Muslims” (Reuters, September 24, 2019) at;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Washtenaw County Democratic Party supports the inclusion of a statement in the 2020 Platform of the Democratic National Party condemning the carrying out by the Chinese government of cultural genocide against Uyghurs and calling for the imposition of economic sanctions against China and against the companies that have enabled China to place the Uyghurs of Xinjiang under strict surveillance and constantly to harass them;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution shall be sent to the Chair and Co-Chair of the Democratic National Committee, members of the Michigan DNC delegation and Michigan’s Democratic Party Chair and Co-Chairs.
