The Executive Board of the Washtenaw County Democratic Party condemns the insensitive racial remarks made by former Ypsilanti Mayor Beth Bashert. As she herself described them, they were racist and completely inappropriate. At a time when our country is in the midst of a reckoning with the corrosive impact of racism and racial injustice in so many areas of our society, we should all be focused on how we can contribute to the healing that we so desperately need to make our country better and to atone for this shameful legacy. Instead, Ms. Bashert has only made things worse through her comments. Sadly, this was not the first time Ms. Bashert has made racially inflammatory remarks; despite her public apology, she gave her community little to suggest that she had turned the page.
We completely support the calls from the Ypsilanti City Council and members of the community for Ms. Bashert’s resignation. We are hopeful that her resignation will allow the community to heal and move on in a productive manner that paves the way for a better future where all of our residents, no matter what their race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, or sexual orientation/identity, have equal access to everything they need to lead a prosperous, happy life and to pursue their dreams.
