A thank-you note is in order. Despite relentless, even unhinged pressure from a sitting president and his followers to flout the law and invalidate the will of tens of thousands of Michigan voters, Republican leaders in the Michigan House and Senate have stood firm. Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and House Majority Leader Lee Chatfield have stated unequivocally, “We do know for certain that we will follow the law and follow the normal process regarding Michigan’s electors.” Their actions offer us a rare opportunity to reach across the aisle with sincere thanks. If you’re so inclined, here are their email addresses and a draft message:
Dear Senator Shirkey / Representative Chatfield,
I’m writing to thank you for defending democracy by protecting the clearly expressed will of Michigan voters against attempts by some to undermine the process. Our very democracy depends upon public servants like you upholding the law. I know you have been under extreme pressure from some quarters. I want you to know that I notice and honor your integrity, as do hundreds of thousands of other Michigan citizens.
With sincere appreciation,
