What we’re doing!
Tabling
We’re going to events like fairs and parades all over the county – from Northfield to Manchester – meeting people where they live, work, and play to raise awareness of the stakes of the 2024 election, and motivate Democratic voters to get to the polls! We train you to create effective conversations, and have fun! Here are some of the places we’re showing up.
- Ann Arbor Art Fair. Thursday, July 18 – Saturday, July 20
- Ypsilanti Jazz in the Parking Lot. Saturday, July 20
- Ann Arbor Pride Celebration. Saturday, August 3
- Manchester Fair Parade. Tuesday, August 6
- Dexter Summer Festival. Friday, August 9 – Saturday, August 10
GOTV
Getting out the vote is core to maintaining our democracy. We’re working with the WCDP’s Precinct Organizing Committee (POC), the One Campaign, and candidate campaigns through lit-dropping, door-knocking, phone-banking, and texting to get Dems of all ages to the polls. You can find Mobilize links for most of this work at the WCDP website.
We’re also especially focused on three campaigns for the Michigan House –
- Re-elect Rep. Jennifer Conlin (HD48), whose district includes a big swath of conservative Livingston County.
- Re-elect Rep. Reggie Miller (HD31), whose district is mostly in conservative Monroe County.
- Daniel Mahoney (HD46), whose Western Washtenaw district spans much of Jackson County. Mr. Mahoney is running to unseat a Republican – the only Republican who has any portion of Washtenaw County!
You can sign up to help any or all of them at the links provided.
Engaging young people of color in Ypsi and beyond
Some media chatter and a few polls about disengaged young Black and Hispanic voters – especially males – has us organizing to make sure we have conversations early and often with peers who wonder why this election should matter to them. We’re organizing events, hanging out, providing voting info, and more. Contact YoungDemsWash@gmail.com for more info.
Working with College Dems
YDW is for everyone from high school to mid-thirties in Washtenaw County, whether you’re working at a small local business, or Target, or the family business, whether you’re devoting your time to raising a family, are hoping to join an apprenticeship program with one of our local unions, or are on any other life path.
That said, we’re also happy to partner with College Dems to get out the vote on campus. Here are contacts and info from the “Big 3” Washtenaw County colleges if you want to connect.
- Eastern Michigan University (EMU), contact Matt Eby (mattjeby@gmail.com), EMU voting information
- University of Michigan (UM), UM voting information.
- Washtenaw Community College (WCC)
